Hi
How long did you leave it before you aborted? Sounds similar to this thread <https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/551753-looking-for-someone-who-has-HP-Z420-workstation-with-dual-OS>

hi malcolmlewis,

thanks for the reply, the link given does not appear relevant

if I select kernel 5.11 to boot with, then grub/sddm restarts after 90 second and repeats indefinitely ( > 15 minutes)

at the moment I’m stuck with kernel 5.3.18-lp152.66-default (TW 15.2) as its the only kernel found with a matching RTL8821ce wifi driver

cheers

SDDM is the graphical target – can you break into the boot and boot to the multi-user target (no graphical interface)?

  • Alternatively, at the GRUB splash screen, add “systemd.unit=multi-user.target
” to the Kernel command line before the system boot begins.

Once you’re logged into a VT as the user root, you can begin to examine the system Journal for an indication as to why SDDM is crashing.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback

I cannot get to a command prompt, the os stalls with the screen showing :-

Booting 'openSUSE Tumbleweed, with Linux 5.11.6-1-default
Loading Linux 5.11.6-1-default …
Loading initial ramdisk …

putting a 2 at the end of the grub kernel parameter line has no effect or trying ctl-alt-F1…F9

when updating with zypper dup, I allowed the loading of rtl8821ce-kmp-default-git20210206_k5.10.16_1-2.3.x86_64 which deleted rtl8821ce-kmp-default-git20210206_k5.10.16_1-2.5.x86_64
this disabled wireless with k5.10.16_1-2.5.x86_64 and hence no way back to use this kernel with a wireless interface,
the sauerland directory only gives support for current kernels

cheers

YFI

This hardware now boots with kernel-default-5.11.9-1.1.g39815e4.x86_64

There was not joy with kernels-default-5.11 up to kernels-default-5.11.8-1.1.g995fe45.x86_64

Just waiting now the associated wireless driver
