Kernel update breaks many things

Last night I updated the kernel to via the KDE update applet.

This morning, attempting to boot I get a lot of FATAL messages. Mostly like this one:

FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/ was the previous kernel.

So no modules can load, this has broken many things including networking and mounting USB sticks. How can I fix this?

Also X will not run and I cannot compile the nVidia drivers.

Any help appreciated.

As root in a console run: depmod -a

this will generate the required modules.dep file

Thanks. Now I get a whole bunch of “FATAL: Module <name> not found.” messages.

Such as:

FATAL: Module dm_mod not found.
FATAL: Module loop not found.
FATAL: Module ip_tables not found.
FATAL: Module ip_conntrack not found.
FATAL: Module nf_conntrack_netbios_ns not found.

Since ip_tables is not found, still no network.

The output from uname -a is:

Linux Artifact-L64 #1 SMP 2008-08-21 00:34:25 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

indicating that the update was not successful. But I do not know know why and don’t know how to find what happened.

What should I try next?

Thanks for any help you can give me.
