I just upgraded to openSuSE 11.4 from 11.1. In 11.1 the contents
of the virtual consoles are kept after a logout, so if I login again,
I get the same environment as before. In 11.4 the contents are
lost. How can I switch on this feature again?
Which virtual consoles? You mean the ones you can reach with Ctrl-Alt-Fn ? When that is the case I do not understand what you mean. Whee you log out of a terminal session (because that is what is in such a console), and login again, you get a prompt, what is the environment of a terminal sesion (I know the environment of a process, thus the bash in your session has an environment, but I guess that is not what you mean).
In short some riddles forr me here (could be I had a bad sleep tonight).
Those are called Deszktops if I am correct. In any case not consoles. (do Ctrl-Alt-F1 to see the console, do Ctrl-Alt-F7 to return to your GUI session).
Then we are mising which Desktop environment you use. Would be nice if you provided such sort of information. Saves time.
In KDE, when you have chosen to restore the desktop on next login, that should of course happen. Is your problem that it is set, but that it is not happening, or is your problem that you do not know where to set it?
I have a dutch translation here, thus I can not say whatthe exact wording is in your case.
Use the System Configuration from the main KDE menu. Then the Advanced tab. Then there is somewhere Session management. And there an item where you can choose between “Restore last session”, “Start with empty session” or “start with predefined session”.
Kmenu is the green lizzard normaly lower left in your panel (I gues you use that a lot of times )
Something like System Settings or System Conguration is there (with a crossed screwdriver and wrench icon).
It is the main thing for configuring KDE. And also some system things can be done from there (after giving the root password), but in openSUSE YaST is the preferred tool for me (do not forget that KDE runs on many systems including Windows, thus they put in those System settings all osrts of configuration even if Linux people would call them not “user ones” but “system ones”).

Assuming you are using KDE, it is the main menu, impossible to explain. The
place where you choose what program to start. All desktops, even windows,
have a main menu.

This is getting difficult. Every KDE user has a Kmenu and the settings are of course somewhere. I made a picture of mine: http://www.xs4all.nl/~hcvv/Kmenu.jpeg.
But beware, I have the Kmenu in “classic style”, thus your’s may be a bit different. In any case the settings icon is fourth from below.
