kdesu 5.92 no longer launching systemsettings5

I’m running the Tumbleweed 20220314 snapshot that includes KDE Framework 5.92. Since updating, typing “kdesu systemsettings5” in KRunner no longer launches the KDE System Settings for the root account. The window to enter the password appears, but then nothing else happens. The same behaviour manifests when typing “kdesu systemsettings5” in Konsole and there is no terminal output whatsoever - making it difficult to diagnose the problem.

The changelog for Frameworks 5.92 lists “Drop obsolete KF5Service and add KF5Config dependency” for kdesu. I have checked in YaST Software Management and I have five of six available “libKF5Config” packages installed, so I do not think I am missing any new dependencies.

(Side note - I am aware of the potential issues of running GUI applications as root. I merely adjust the Appearance settings (accent colour etc.) to match those for my user account for a consistent appearance across all applications).

  • Is anyone else experiencing this issue with kdesu 5.92? (I’ve searched both KDE and openSUSE Bugzillas, the KDE forum, and looked at recent posts on both KDE and openSUSE Reddits).
  • Given the lack of terminal output, how can I gather meaningful error/diagnostic information for a bug report? (I am assuming for the moment that this is a KDE bug, rather than an openSUSE one).

Correct.

  • It’s a KDE bug – please report it to the KDE Bugzilla.

Reported - 451595 – kdesu 5.92 no longer launching systemsettings5

I’ve found a workaround to access the root account settings for Appearance by using kcmshell5 (e.g. “kdesu kcmshell5 kcm_colors” and “kdesu kcmshell5 kcm_lookandfeel”).

While this restores the functionality I wished for, it increases the mystery for me as to why “kdesu systemsettings5” no longer works.

It’s working again for me in the 20220320 snapshot
