Anybody else seen this? It is preventing me from using the File>Open>Browse menu in any app at all to find files on my USB HDD, although I can use Dolphin and open files directly from there. I googled "“kdemediamanager not running” but just got a pile of forum posts from 2006.
I’ve never seen this before, but have you tried typing kmediamanager in the run box?
It doesn’t seem as if I have it on my system (KDE 3.5.9 with Suse 10.3) but that would be the first thing I would try if I received that error.
Thanks for the reply. It’s nice to know I can get somethings right - that was the first thing I tried.
Nothing happens when I type either “kdemediamanager”, “mediamanager” or “kmediamanager” in the Run box. From what urened up in Google, I think it’s a KDE4 component, apparently not 100% functional at present.
I checked my install, no command. I even ran yast (which has the KDE4 repos enabled) and found nothing.
Outside of that I really have no ideas.
I assume you are running KDE 4? I have it installed, but it is buggy on my box, so I don’t run it.
I’m bringing this back up because when I installed 11.1RC1, I still got exactly the same error message: “kdemediamanager not running” - what is it, what is it supposed to do, and why isn’t it running?
I think the relevant process is
kded (for kde3)
kded4 (for kde4)
With KDE3 you can set it via control centre > kde components > service manager. (Similar process for KDE4).
Hi
I also get this message “KDE media manager not running” error when I start up the computer. I checked the forums and found two threads dealing with it, but they both are a dead end. When I go t control center etc. I don’t find anything related to this function. KDE works fine otherwise, i.e. I can do anything with any media.
Thanks for the help peeps.

I got this error this morning when I tried to backup data from kmymoney to a usb thumb drive. I looked in YaST -->system → system services but I did not see anything call media manager. Also did a ps -A. It must be called something else. I final just restarted (boot) and everything is working fine. System logs did not show any error.
I and openSUSE 11.0(64 bit), KDE 3.5.9 and KDE 4.1.3, KmyMoney 0.92.
Please post anything you find on this and I will do the same.

Thanks for the response I get this for kde:
ps -A |grep kde
3323 ? 00:00:00 startkde
3475 ? 00:00:00 kdeinit4
3478 ? 00:00:01 kded4
3866 ? 00:00:00 policykit-kde
3876 ? 00:00:00 kdeinit
3892 ? 00:00:00 kded
32580 ? 00:00:00 kdesud
and this for kded:
3478 ? 00:00:01 kded4
3892 ? 00:00:00 kded
But which one is kdemediamanager?
Rebooting has fixed the problem for me for now.

I get
arboon@linux-vb0t:~> ps -A|grep kde
2073 ? 00:00:00 startkde
2656 ? 00:00:00 kdeinit4
2683 ? 00:00:00 kded4
2823 ? 00:00:00 policykit-kde
2826 ? 00:00:00 kdeinit
2833 ? 00:00:00 kded
rebooting did not solve my problem, it still shows up. it must
be calling kdemediamanager somewhere in the init files. I hope soon a fix will be made, If I do it myself, i will probably ruin something…;-). Everything else works fine so I will continue clicking it away…
actually, the whole thing disappeared some weeks ago. a fixed bug? who knows…;-))
Hahahaha, well, after a short break to Linux Mint (which couldn’t get my resolution right) I am back to OpenSuse and guess what: the notification is also back! I assume it’ll leave by itself, just like the last time.
I’m bringing this back up because when I installed 11.1RC1, I still got
exactly the same error message: “kdemediamanager not running” - what is
it, what is it supposed to do, and why isn’t it running?

The process is called
kded (for kde3)
kded4 (for kde4)
With KDE3 you can set it via control centre > kde components > service
manager
