I’ve recently upgraded from 11.1 to 11.2. The new KDE4 version of K3B does not produce usable data DVD’s. The data is written to the disk and I get a writing finished message. but no closing disk or finalizing message. I’m using DVD-R disks. The disks produced are unreadable even though I can visually see that the data has been written to the DVD when I remove it from the drive. The KDE 3.5 version of K3B, which is still installed, produces perfectly usable DVDs using the exact same data. The difference is that after I receive the writing finished message, I also receive a closing and finalizing message.
Is there some extra command in the KDE4 version to close the disk or is this a bug or a quirk of my installation?
I have been using the Packman version of K3b installed with the K3bcodecs. Using the same 11.2 system and the same drive, the KDE 3.5 version of K3b writes DVD’s successfully, so it is not the drive. I don’t have any blank CD’s around, but if I remember correctly, CD’s are not written correctly either.
I did do a search before posting this thread and, while I found many problems reported, none resembled mine. I don’t get any error messages, data are written to the DVD, but the DVD is unreadable on this computer and another one I use. I get a message saying data has been written correctly, but I don’t get a message saying the disk has been finalized, so I’m guessing that the problem lies there.
I am using the 64 bit version of K3B and saw others have had problems, but from what I can tell from their posts, data never got written to the disk. In my case, data are written just fine, but the disk is unreadable.
That not finalizing is probably not good. Do you have some leftover versions of backend programs like growisofs, or wodim from 11.1 lying around? There’s a screen in k3b which shows you all the supporting programs it found and I’m not sure, but also the version numbers. I’m thinking perhaps you have a system which still has bits of 11.1 in it.
Thanks, you’ve hit the problem area. When I checked the supporting programs, I found two copies of each installed - one version in /usr/bin and another in /usr/bin/X11. The version numbers were the same for each copy and judging from the file sizes and dates, they were identical. The KDE4 version of K3b used the usr/bin files and the KDE3 version, left over from 11.1, used the files in /usr/bin/X11. When I switched the KDE4 version to the support programs in /usr/bin/X11 (used by the KDE3 version) it started to work correctly. Very strange!.
Perhaps one or more of the files in /usr/bin were corrupted somehow.
Yes, I have two copies of wodim also, in /usr/bin and /usr/bin/X11, and like yours they are the same size, same date, same permissions, and according to rpm come from the same package, wodim. But they compare equal. Do yours compare equal?
cmp /usr/bin/wodim /usr/bin/X11/wodim
If not, that would be a worry, because you might have installation problems or disk problems. Try:
rpm -V wodim
to see if the file checksums match those declared in the package.
Incidentally I wonder why the packager didn’t make one a link to the other to save a bit of space. Maybe it’s a transitional arrangement or something.
The files are identical and the checksums match. It is peculiar that changing the support apps to identical ones in a different directory would solve my problem. Which directory is your K3b using?
Thank you so much for this thread. I’ve been trying ever since I upgraded to kde4-k3b to get an iso of a live cd burned with no sucess. Had no problems with my older version and tried different media still with no success. I did notice that i had two versions of cdrecord and the other tools in the suite in the two different directories as been pointed out, but didn’t think to switch them over in k3b. Once I did viola, my k3b successfully burned the ISO. I’m not completely sure why this is? As it has been mentioned the files and versions all look the same to me, but I haven’t really dug in yet to look at it. Still seems very strange to me, but i’m a happy customer to have my cd/dvd burner back.
Would one or both of you please report this as a bug at bugzilla.novell.com? The two versions of the programs should do the same thing, but evidently doesn’t. I’m wondering if it has something to do with apparmor profiles.
