IMHO you do run is as root because you gave the root password it asked for.
And no, this can only be run as root. You do not want every single user to install things I hope.
BTW the updater applet has some problems since a few weeks. When you want to update security updates just use YaST > Online update (and it will ask for the root password).
I have also been seeing this recently. However, in checking the installed software, it looks as if the updates happen OK. The updater is just expecting some final message that the system doesn’t send any more.
I’ve gotten this starting today, but only if I select all packages. If I select a large amount of packages to install. If there’s just a couple at a time, there’s no error message.
I was able to update everything except for four packages: kio_iso plasma-theme-aya kdelibs4-core libkde4 kdelibs4. When I updated via zypper, I was notified that plasma-theme-aya would change architecture, and kio_iso would change vendor.
This always happened when I tried to update KDE 4.1 packages from the factory repo. Maybe it had to update KDEsu so it wouldn’t let you update using the tool? Or maybe it’s because of the number of packages like Wrath5000 said.
I have exactly the same problem. The system is Opensuse11 with KDE4.1 from Factory. Selecting all available updates brings up immediately the aforementioned error window. Selecting the first 30-40 updates work, depending on an unknown factor. Does this issue have a corresponding bug post?
Yup. I’m also getting this problem. It’s a brand new install of OpenSUSE x86_64, and I’m trying to install the latest updates for the first time. It’s the first time it’s booted up from the hard disk with no changes made so far.
Yesterday I got this problem too. I have Opensuse11 X86_64.
Right after I finished running the “Get patches to correct and improve your existing installation”, the problem was gone.
From start -> Search: update -> “Get patches to correct and improve your existing installation”
I get this also. If I only select about a page worth of packages, it updates fine. If I select all packages it fails with the original poster’s error.
I just tried searching for “update” from the application launcher (start… please this is not windows )
I don’t get “Get patches to correct and improve your existing installation”, but I do have “Update your system to the newest packages from FACTORY”, which is the Factory update tool in yast2.
However, if I try and run this it gives me a big red warning saying… “Updating system to another version (openSUSE 11.0 → openSUSE Education Addon 1.0 for 11.0 ) is not supported on the running system.
Please, boot from the installation media and use a normal upgrade or disable software repositories of products with different versions.”
Which I don’t understand as an error message, As I do not have a clue why it thinks it is the Education Addon.
H’anyway, running OpenSUSE 11.0 X64 and have added the necessary repos for kde4.1 and qt.
Very curious as to why the updater tool has this problem and how to fix it.
I too have the same problem. I am a new Open Suse 11.0 user. I tried downloading the OpenSuse suggested updates for security (43) and after placing my password in I receive the Daimen not responding message. - What are we suppose to do? - N8LUV

I have seen this problem after installing OpenSUSE 11.0 and then performing the updates (e.g. 43 updates). I found that performing the updates in groups of files rather than all in one go would work.
E.g.
- Update the yast packages
- Update the kernal packages (possible reboot when finished)
- Update the lib*
- then update everything else in groups of about 10
