KDE4 Kmail ugly message list

How can I get rid of this ugly new display in the message list. All these
horizontal dividing bars with dates on are a pain.

Settings>Configure Kmail>Appearance>Layout

Sorry, but none of that changes the appearance of the message list. I’d also
tried the buttons above the list to the right of the search bar but none had
the effect I wanted, i.e., to return to the good old, uncluttered KDE3
display.

One of the displays I’m looking at now has 5 e-mails in the list and 9
splitter bars. What a waste of space! Even when using “expand all groups”
it’s still cluttered.

You may also want to check the small icon to the far right of the search
bar. It is a Button to set the theme…set it to ‘classic’.

Select Aggregation mode and tick flat date view
It is in the top right of your kmail gui

How did I miss that? I’d tried everything on the “view appearance” button
and thought I’d tried likely candidates on “select aggregation mode” but
just didn’t see that one - or, to be correct, I saw it but didn’t notice it.

It’s a bit like at the supermarket when I’ve searched everywhere for a
particular item and when I finally find someone to ask where it is, they
point to the shelf straight in front of me. I’d blame failing eyesight if
this sort of thing hadn’t happened regularly when I had good eyesight.

Thanks for pointing in the right direction.

You’re welcome

Hi,
the aggregation mode seems to be what I have been looking for but I can’t seem to find it. which version of KDE and/or Kmail has this aggregation mode? I can’t see the button or turn it on under kde 4.1.3 and kmail 4.1.3-86.6. Is there a way to make it appear?

In KDE 4.2 it’s one of the buttons to the right of the search bar - I don’t
know about 4.1. If you want to view threads instead of “flat date view”
you’ll need to select "configure . . " and set up your own system. I set up
a new one copied from “flat date view” but added threading from the “groups,
threading and sorting” tab.

Great how things get more difficult with each software “improvement” isn’t
it?
