I tried kde4.1 last week. Desktop effect Worked very slow with geforce 6200.
I’ve been using compiz-fusion since months ago, and it works smooth.
I ever tried compizfusion with geforce 4 card. And it worked good.
So tell me about kde4.x. Is it only developed for high-end graphics cards (GeForce 8x for example) ???
Vista is only developed for high end graphics cards. I see nothing difference between vista and Kde4 now.
I had KDE-4.1 liveCD running on an Athlon-1100 with a nVidia MX400. That PC was purchased over 6 years ago, and it is far from being high-end in its graphics.
KDE4.1 (liveCD) ran at ok speeds (ie no worse than 3.5.9) with no “desktop effects” enabled. I plan to install openSUSE-11.1 alpha2 (with KDE-4.1) on it later this week.
From my assessment, if you wish to have “desktop effects” then a high end graphic card is needed, but if you dispense with the “desktop effects” then KDE4 runs fine.
An Intel or ATI card would be fine.
I agree, I have a desktop with a very low end Intel card (can’t give details not at my desktop ATM), not so low end that is not supported by XGL or AIXGL, and I have KDE 4.1 installed on it with Kwin’s composting effects enabled it may be a little be on the slow side, just a little be slower than my laptop with a ATI Radeon X1100 but it is fast enough to be usable. Maybe use Kwin over Compiz-Fuzion with KDE 4.1 if you are.

especially nvidia cards have some performance problems with kde4. Maybe one of the hints User:Lemma/GPU-Performance - KDE TechBase helps you to increase your performance.

@vendion: Kwin also uses AIGLX, the intel drivers do support it.
I have a nvidia 6800 XT and Kwin compositing runs very well for everyday use. I can run games with it on as well, but there’s a slight, barely noticeable frame rate stutter in fast paced games like Quake 3 with it on.
What is the framerate you’re getting with Kwin?

Well seeing that you tried it for a week and with flakey video drivers, I’m
not surprised. Next time do a little research and you may find the culprit.
It is well known, and well discussed that at this time nVidia drivers are
rubbish when used with KDE 4.X. There is a beta driver available that some
have reported getting vastly improved performance with. Perhaps go to
nVidia’s site and get the scoop or consult the myriad other posts on this
same topic.
