I am using catalyst drivers installed via yast on opensuse-11.0 with an x600 mobility. I got big desktop mode (one big single screen spanning across my 2 monitors) working but due to some circumstances I wanted to move to 2 independent screens. After much hassle got also this working in Xfce and Gnome, but my preferred DE KDE4 simply refuses to activate the second monitor. It gets a signal but it stays black and I can only see a big ugly cross on it when I move the mouse to it, other than that it is of no use. On the working display (the laptop screen) I have a somewhat shrinked KDE desktop that doesn’t take up all the space it could, with a checkboard pattern where the wallpaper does not fit.
What puzzles me is that like I already mentioned 2 independent screens do work in Xfce and Gnome.
I myself did not have a success with kd4 with two separate screens.
I tried it because there was a posting here before with similar problem.
What I noticed was kde4 seems to rely on sax2 dualhead settings. when you turn it off the 2nd monitors goes black. I tried the nvidia control and it can’t make it work. I guess there is no support yet. Best thing to do is probably forward this issue directly to the kd4 mailing list. I am not 100% sure that it is not supported because I did not research outside to find some documentation.
I could be wrong with what I said so please if it is, someone kindly correct it
It actually seems that multi screen support (multiple independent screens, not xinerama) isn’t implemented yet in KDE4, I thinl I will use Xfce for the time being.
Yes it is a good choice. That is what I am using right now, xfce with separate independent screen. You can still run kde 4 on one of the screen and have the feel of it by running plasma or plasma --nodesktop.
