I’m new to KDE, and I was playing around with panels and putting widgets on my desktop. After I set up a bunch of widgets, I clicked on the cashew in the upper right corner and got a dialog which had a checkbox with something like “separate activity for each desktop”, I think. I clicked that checkbox, and immediately all my screen icons vanished. Also, now I can’t get that dialog back to reverse what I did. Is this a bug or am I missing something? I just downloaded OpenSUSE a few days ago and I think I have KDE version 4.3.1.
Try unchecking different activity for each desktop. If that fails: click on the first desktop to set it as number one, then zoom out until you can see all the activities. If you see the desktop with the icons that you lost, click on the magnifying glass icon and zoom in. That will reset it as desktop one. Also, if the desktop is not quite seated, click on the cashew again to lock it to the grid.
If you get desperate -
Open a terminal and paste this and hit enter, then reboot immediately
mv .kde4 .kde4-old
Would a reboot be necessary? Wouldn’t logging off and logging onto a new KDE session create the new files?

Why don’t you just put your icons back (Folderview)? What you have now is actually preferable: you can have different plasmoids and backgrounds for each desktop.
Thanks to everyone for the responses. Today when I brought up my machine the checkbox for “Different activity for each desktop” was back again. Not sure why it wasn’t there yesterday. I’ll continue to try out panels and widgets, but so far the results frequently seem unintuitive.
Removing .kde4 and rebooting is interesting. I assume that resets the desktop to a default state? (I’m not ready to try that option yet).

then
rm plasma-appletsrc plasma-desktop-appletsrc plasma-desktoprc plasmarc
login
If you worked form the desktop, logout and back in
