On the 25th of November 2010 KDE4 4.6 beta 1 has been released, followed by the release of openSUSE packages in the KDE:Distro/Factory repos. After a lot of comments on this news, please post your experiences and problems here.

My problem is whether I’ll remember this posting come this time next year.

Thanks, Cloddy, post adjusted.
Seems to have wiped out my address book.
Backupped before upgrading, I hope.
I have kde 4.6 beta 1 from updating from M3 to M4.
Only problems have been the duplicating of the hard drive info (as posted elsewhere) and the kamil problems (again posted elsewhere). sysinfo being all over the place got on my nerves - so I’ve kept M4 but downgraded kde to 4.5.3.
Audex crashes (installed from extra repo) - QSocketNotifier: invalid socket 10 and type ‘Read’, disabling…
#audex
KCrash: Application ‘audex’ crashing…
KCrash: Attempting to start /usr/lib64/kde4/libexec/drkonqi from kdeinit
sock_file=/home/smiley/.kde4/socket-circus.site/kdeinit4__0
QSocketNotifier: Invalid socket 10 and type ‘Read’, disabling…
audex(6771): Communication problem with “audex” , it probably crashed.
Error message was: “org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown” : " “The name de.maniatek.audex was not provided by any .service files” "
It takes a gawd awful long time loading. and where is the kbluetooth?
Other than that kde4.6b1 is running ok
Hibernate not working when called from kmenu but works if initialed from the power down button
It is replaced by bluedevil
Since I have installed 4.6 beta, my screen get locked after some time of inactivity, but I have turned screen saver off.
Also tried with screen saver on, with “require password” un-checked, bur screen get locked anyway.
Problem is, of course, that I DON’T WANT my screen locked.
Is that the same kind of “improvement” as it was with disabling root login in KDE 4.5.1?

I tried 4.6 and my data was migrated both successfully and unsuccessfully
according to the conflicting messages. Kontact doesn’t work except for a new
user. I switched back to KDE 4.5.3 and Kontact 4.4.7. Nothing seems to have
been adversely affected. My address book is still OK.

First: remember, this is a BETA !!!, which means “not ready”, “not stable”. If you think you found a bug, report it. That will help the devs to improve things.
Also: remember, that a lot of features/settings are made by the devs on request of the community.
In this case: Systemsettings - Powermanagement. Take a look around and you’ll find the option that locks your screen.
I know it is beta, I love beta and use it all the time, my kernel is 2.6.37-rc3, OOo 3.2.98.1, Firefox 4.0b8-nightly, Thunderbird 3.3a1 (Miramar) etc…
About Systemsettings - Powermanagement, there is only an option to “Lock screen on resume”, but my computer never goes to sleep, I have only configured it to turn off screen after some time.
Just don’t know if this is some new “undocumented feature” or a real bug. I have turned off “Lock on resume” and will report bug if that should resolve my problem.

In the Systemsettings - Powermanagement, there’s an option ‘Session interrupt’, check whether it’s set in any of the profiles. Uncheck in all profiles and you should be alright.

I have M4 and KDE 4.6 Beta 1 on my test environment. My major problem is
Akonadi will not start. I’ve been thru the troubleshooting pages, all
appears correct. Appears like it won’t register with D-Bus, maybe major
reason. There were no contact to migrate from my MS3 install so I
apparently have no contacts folder.

Hello,
In KDE SC4.6β1 for me the “open file” dialogue in any application that is using the KDE open File mechanism takes nearly 30 seconds to appear. Including Opera and VLC, in addition to the KDS SC programs. The application meanwhile is unresponsive.
Additionally Dolphin, but not Konqueror takes nearly 30 seconds to launch. However the file management capabilities of Konqueror are laggy, just like Dolphin.
Regards,
Keren

Thanks, does sound like its the same problem or a related problem. I
turned it in to KDE Bug. I’ll findit and add comment it may be duplicate
of this Novell Bug.
