KDE4.1 - I'm confused

After reading about KDE4.1, I decided to take the plunge - so I did a 1-click install. I then rebooted and was confronted with a plain white desktop, with all my icons as they used to be. If I look in Kmenu I find lots of new kde4 applications. I tried to configure the desktop with rightclick configure desktop - but nothing changes. The screensaver still works as it used to.
Do I need to remove kde 3.5.9 ?
I thought that after re-booting I would be confronted with a nice new default background that I could then configure to my liking. Clearly, I have a lot of learning to do - which I don’t mind, but I am not sure how to start.

KDE 4.1 is in the Factory which means it is not yet regarded as Stable. As I understand the situation, it will not become Stable until 11.1.

4.1 is STABLE - it’s simply placed in the Build Service rather than an automatic upgrade. (And saying 4.0.4 is a ‘stable’ release is a bit of a joke if you ask me)

don’t forget, once installed, you need to select it from the sessions menu

Thanks for the replies. Do I need to remove 3.5.9?

Hi,

no you don’t need to remove kde 3. Even the config files of kde 3 and kde 4 are stored in a separate location (KDE/KDE4 - openSUSE). You can choose between kde 3 and kde 4 by selecting the appropriate entry in the kdm session menu.

When you first login to kde4 it tries to convert the settings to kde4 maybe something went wrong. As a first try just delete your ~/.kde4 folder and relogin.

hope this helps

Thanks all, I’m not confused anymore. It’s really great - and with so many options.
I’m staying with 4.1 now !!
