I’m considering upgrading my Suse to the newest 12.2 version, but first I need to know what is the state of KDE 3.5. I know that KDE3 relied on HAL, but HAL was removed from Suse. My question is how does it affect KDE3? Was it stripped from features that needed HAL and if so what were these features?
Disclaimer: While I always appreciate the great feedback I get from community on this forum, the first person to mention that I should use KDE4 gets Punched In The Face ™.

I haven’t heard yet anything about kde3 working or not working in 12.2.

I have kde 3.5 installed on my 12.2 (well actually 12.3 ms0 now) and it works without any problems.

Same here on an older netbook with 12.2 i586 upgraded from 12.1. I use
the kde3 repo mentioned before by zerum (and as alternative desktop
environment Razor-qt).

On 12.2 you only need hal for kpowersave and for knetworkmanager. If you do not use them, you do not need hal.
Is there any alternative to kpowersave that doesn’t need hal?
BTW I recall having some issues with kpowersave under suse 11.4 Out-of-the-box it was unable to control frequency of the cpu, so all cores were running at 100% speed. I needed to change some files in PolicyKit in order for this to work.
It can use powersave daemon, but it is unsupported even longer than HAL.
Works well for me.
