kde won't start with radeon driver

Hi,

I got 11.3 64-bit installed properly the first time around and working with a Radeon HD4350. I noticed X to be somewhat sluggish on certain apps under KDE so a couple of days ago I tried to install the Catalyst 10.10 tool from the unofficial repository. I didn’t like it and uninstalled it.

After some research it turned out that the proper driver is radeon so I uninstalled the radeonhd driver and rebooted hoping Xorg will pick up the radeon driver automatically as it is included with my kernel. Didn’t work and I couldn’t even get past the failsafe login screen. Regular boot doesn’t even get to the login screen. Just hangs and won’t respond to any keyboard commands. I followed the instruction at this SDB Configuring graphics cards in openSUSE 11.3 using the ATI Xorg -configure option from level 3 console and creating a radeon xorg.conf file. It all works to the point of “startx” as regular user which just brings me back to console. Rebooting and does the same things as before under failsafe and regular. Even nomodeset doesn’t help.

The output error from startx in failsafe console mode is the following:

Could not open library ksmserver: Cannot load library /usr/lib64/libkdeinit4_ksmserver.so (libatiuki.so.1: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory)

Anyone knows how to fix this? reinstalling is not an option as I have a lot of custom stuff on this box.

It might pay to take a look at your kernel boot options in /boot/grub/menu.lst, as this may have an impact on your graphics driver problems. From this page, your graphics chipset appears to be supported by the radeon driver. It should not be necessary to have xorg.conf in order to get the radeon driver working for your graphics card, so try renaming it to start with. Next look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log for any errors arising from the X-server startup.

This might be part of the problem if the proprietary driver package was not uninstalled completely.

Hi deano, yeah I have a feeling it all boils down to the Catalyst removal too. The Kernel boot options are below:

In the meantime I could start the IceWM no problem from the failsafe login screen.

Also, the libatiuki.so.1 library is actually part of the proprietary ATI package so I reinstalled it and now I can also start KDE(failsafe), so it’s definitely a problem with the ATI package. I’ll take a look at the troubleshooting page.

Thats good re being able to start in failsafe mode. I think the Xorg.0.log file you submitted pertains to your sytem starting up in failsafe mode, rather than attempting normal boot, so I’m not sure it is showing the relevant issue here.

I also note references to a Cirrus video chipset - do you have onboard video enabled as well?

Further down the log file, I then see references to an ATI HD 4350 chipset, but no mention of attempting to load the radeon driver.

Mobo is an asus m2n-e with no onboard devices except for audio and ethernet. The Radeon hd4350 is the only video card installed. I have no clue where this cirrus comes from and it is not there anymore. pastebin.com doesn’t seem to be reachable this morning so I’ll wait a bit before posting the log file. It’s just too big to quote here.

Tried to boot the regular desktop kernel just now to get a more representative Xorg log file and I got no problems at all. The system booted straight into KDE and I logged in no problem. In fact I am typing this from the KDE 4.4.4 “release 3” desktop.

Right now I am using the Catalyst 10.10 driver since I reinstalled it yesterday to be able to log in from failsafe. Here’s the concerned part of the xorg.conf file.

This can be removed from your xorg.conf (as you only require the device section containing the fglrx driver reference)

I commented the radeon Device section out in the xorg.config file, logged out and back in. Everything works fine with fgl_glxgears but still get the same errors in Xorg log file.

Everything works fine with fgl_glxgears but still get the same errors in Xorg log file.

Yes, I’m not sure what the implications of that error is. I wouldn’t worry about it for now. Your graphics driver appears to be working ok anyway…

The proprietary driver is actually working better than before. I guess it didn’t install properly the first time around but now I’m pretty sure I will keep it. No need to worry about this until OS 12.3 comes out :slight_smile:
