PROBLEM TWO ON LAPTOP:
HP Pavillion dv5000 64b DVD install. 1.25G ram
i’m finding 11.1 to be a pretty rough go in general.
this is my laptop i’m using right now and i killed the entire system yesterday because the compiler was asking for libxml2-devel. so i read somewhere that i would have to remove libxml2 first then re install it…
removing it took all of KDE with it.
i rebuilt from iceWM by installing KDE 4.3 UNSTABLE and it works better than it did, but a some crap never came back.
sound is dead won’t autoconfigure.
K3b is convinced that there is no optical drive.
but the system mounts things fine.
as long as they’re not usb.
whoops, is guess it sees one of my external drives, but not the other.
still won’t mount it though.
“org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.PermissionDeniedByPolicy: org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-removable
auth_admin_keep_always”
that’s what it tells me. huh?
if anyone knows which packages may give me back some of my funcionality…
what i did was this:
trashed KDE with [sudo zypper remove libxml2].
didn’t really notice it telling me this would happen because of dependencies.
said “oh crap. this is why i’m a gui guy.”
then used [sudo zypper install libxml2] before leaving KDE.
then used iceWM to find out that what i was trying to compile actually worked.
and iceWM works pretty good too.
but i then used zypper to get firefox.
then did a one click install of the “KDE 4.3 basis” and it booted and looked great. some things didn’t work though.
i thought that doing update from DVD and repositories would help to replace some missing stuff. did that.
long and short is that i’m still not completely up, but this Desktop Environment is better than the last. as you might expect.
anyway, if anyone has any ideas about these two things i would be very grateful.
thanks,
aaron
Hi,
Both of those sound like a Hal problem. With K3b you should just be able to add yourself to either the CDROM or DISK group (depending on which group your optical drive is in). Try either one and see if it lets you see your drive. The only other way I can think Hal won’t work is if you just installed and you didn’t update yet.
One last thing, if you’re a gui guy why are you using the CLI and zypper? Yast does just a great job for adding packages, it just takes more clicks. I’m not sure what zypper does if you get dependency errors but yast stops you and asks you what you want to do .
In any case you can check your dependencies by opening Yast Software Manager then clicking Dependencies>Check Now.
Good Luck,
Ian
i think that may work, after a reboot.
i just tried it out and no luck yet, but i’m downloading the live install CD for KDE 4.2 and i don’t want to interrupt it right now.
all day i’ve upgraded and downgraded and you should tell me how KDE 4.3 is, because when i tried to use it again from the one click install it would come up, but i had no keyboard for any system input functions. it was really weird. terminal wouldn’t respond to typing, password wouldn’t do anything, but keyboard commands were fine.
so when i wanted to logout there were no menus i just used [ctrl alt F1].
it turns out i like compiling software from source. it’s better when it doesn’t kill everything. i’ve been trying to run linux fulltime since mandrake 9 and this time i’m hell bent. so learning to get software that i can’t find repos for is part of that. i think that virtualbox works better with a manual install also.
yesterday i got a hankerin’ for DeVeDe. it makes you get mplayer, mencoder, dvdauthor, vcdimager, and spumux.
there’s probably a repo for those, but i don’t have it.
yast is very cool, but i got DeVeDe to work without it at the expense of my desktop, but hey, 4.3 is mature enough that even my wife thought it looked kool. so i’m glad to go down a frustrating road if there’s a reward.
thanks for the advice,
aaron
the sound is back after the live update enacted by the DVD.
after changing groups and adding cdrom and disk and rebooting K3b starts with cd recognition but, after starting write process it feeds me “cdrecord has no permission to open the device.”
that i don’t get. i could uninstall and reinstall it.
Hmmm… Well adding both of those groups should definitely have let you use your cd drive. Although even just one of them should be needed…scratch that, none of those should be NEEDED. You SHOULD be able to burn anything without having to be in any of those groups.
I think you have a pretty messed up system right now. Is there any way you could reinstall, and then I can guide you through adding the needed repositories? Because mplayer and all those should be installable through the packman repository. Although this is a 64 bit system as you said so it might be different.
If you can’t reinstall I can try to help you at least get your repositories right. Could you please open up a terminal and give me the output of
zypper lr
Good Luck,
Ian
well i think i’m gonna do that i just burnt the .iso for the KDE live installer.
the K3b was working i think. the thing is that these cd drives pop open sometimes. that’s what mine did.
i just did a bunch more updates though and the K3b KDE4 version is better than the 3 version, but it has given me a “file not found” error. and the dude needs a new splash graphic. great software though.
i’m totally spooked out at this point. i’m going run this live CD through the ringer before i commit to it.
then, of course i’ll be on the reinstall trail again.
unless i can get the installer to spare my home partition.
anyway, your advice was dead bullseye on.
thanks,
aaron
No problem, although really all you did was update packages and that probably helped.
But if you do decide to reinstall (I’m not too familiar with LVM based installs, I use the default separate /home partition for mine so if I mess up I can just wipe the / partition and keep my /home files with a reinstall), then it would be best to post back here so you can be guided through the process after you’re done installing. There are repositories you have to add for a lot of your packages. I would also recommend not going with KDE 4.3 unless you know what you’re doing and can self diagnose any problems. Just stick with KDE 4.2 for now and wait for 4.3 as it still has some work before it’s completely functional.
Good Luck,
Ian
oh hell yeah.
that worked like crazy.
live install left my home partition alone and by the way LVM works great.
the best thing about the openSUSE installer is the separate partition default installation.
now yast is running my updates about a gig’s worth and this GUI is gorgeous.
version 4.2.2 is what was on the .iso.
it looks like i’ll have to do the install for DeVeDe again, but i liked the program a very easy converter for vid files after i render them in blender.
Well I’m glad everything’s up and running! After the update (which should also bring in a kernel update) you’ll need to restart and everything should be working fine. KDE 4.2 is definitely one of the best Desktop Environments I’ve ever used (including windows 7 which I was amazed at for some of the functionality it brings). Now that I’m running 4.3 with Compiz-Fusion I’m pretty happy.
DeVeDe is in the repos. I know you said you like compiling programs but mos programs are either in one of the repositories or you can find it using the software search page Software.openSUSE.org
Hope the rest of the ride is smooth!
Ian
did it.
it all worked out well.
DeVeDe was in the repos. and of course all of the other stuff i use.
i might use the compiz thing too.
is that what gave me the ability to see inside folders by mousing them?
No,
That is a feature of KDE 4.3. A rather useful one indeed. But the beta should be coming out soon, so if you’re so inclined you could try it, but as I stated before, there are still bugs to be dealt with and it really shouldn’t be used unless you can self diagnose any problems (which really means that I shouldn’t be using it but I like to walk on the wild side). One thing I just found out is that kbluetooth4 still needs work.
Compiz-Fusion is a window manager that lets you do all the special effects. Really it does pretty much what Kwin does, but some people like compiz better than kwin or kwin better than compiz. Ah the choices of opensource
