I want something simular to cheese for Gnome for the KDE Desktop. My Web cam is built into my Netbook, and it works under Gnome when I was using Ubuntu, I’ve now switched to OpenSuse and KDE.

Be ****ed if I could ever get webkam to run without all the stupid errors it throws up, I have tried installing everything ruby and gstreamer related, that others have posted including you, and it never works.
KDE 4.4.4 and KDE 4.5 neither will run.

You need to install ruby-glib2-0.19.3-3.18.x86_64.rpm and
ruby-gstreamer-0.19.3-3.18.x86_64.rpm, search it on the openSUSE web

I’ve done that. Per other posts I have seen from you. Still doesn’t work.
BTW what is the openSuSE web?
I installed those two packages on my openSUSE-11.3 RC2 LXDE desktop and it still did not help with my webcam. Hence I am not convinced those are the right packages to fix this problem.
What DID work for me was to install the packman packaged “gstreamer-plugins-extra” which also pulls in the dependencies “libavc1394 and libiec61883”.
I note:
Libavc1394 is a programming interface to the AV/C specification from the 1394 Trade Association. AV/C stands for Audio/Video Control. Currently, applications use the library to control the tape transport mechanism on DV camcorders. However, there are many devices and device functions that can be controlled via AV/C. Eventually, the library will be expanded to implement more of the specification and to provide a high level interface to various devices.
and also note:
The libiec61883 library provides a higher level API for streaming DV, MPEG-2 and audio over Linux IEEE 1394. This includes both reception and transmission. It uses the new “rawiso” API of libraw1394, which transparently provides mmap-ed DMA for efficient data transfer. It also represents the third generation of I/O technology for Linux 1394 for these media types thereby removing the complexities of additional kernel modules, /dev nodes, and procfs. It also consolidates features for plug control registers and connection management that previously existed in experimental form in an unreleased version of libavc1394.
… most of that is way above my head.
So I can not say whether it is gstreamer-plugin-extras, or libavc1394, or libiec61883 that provides the functionality that cheese needs, but one (or more) of them did the trick.
I just searched yast and packmans website for gstreamer-plugins-extra. I got zero results
Mea culpa, … I abbreviated too much (going by my memory which as everyone on this forum knows is notoriously bad). So I’m bad. …
I should have typed : “gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good-extra”.
Installed it made no difference.
I am CONVINCED it did make a difference, or if not it (gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good-extra) then one or both of its two dependencies libavc1394 and/or libiec61883.
I don’t suppose you could tell us what error you get when typing ‘cheese’ from a terminal ?
I note I also have various v4l apps installed:
oldcpu@stonehenge01:~> rpm -qa '*v4l*'
libv4l-0.6.4-6.1.i586
v4l-tools-3.95-214.2.i586
libv4l1-0-0.6.4-6.1.i586
libv4lconvert0-0.6.4-6.1.i586
v4l-conf-3.95-214.2.i586
libv4l2-0-0.6.4-6.1.i586
and also xawtv, motv, and camsource (none of which should be necessary). For gsteamer apps I have:
oldcpu@stonehenge01:~> rpm -qa '*gst*'
libgstinterfaces-0_10-0-0.10.29-999.pm.999.1.i586
gstreamer-0_10-plugin-hal-0.10.22-1.16.i586
ruby-gstreamer-0.19.3-3.3.i586
PackageKit-gstreamer-plugin-0.6.3-5.4.i586
libgstapp-0_10-0-0.10.29-999.pm.999.1.i586
gstreamer-0_10-devel-0.10.29-999.pm.999.5.i586
libgstfarsight-0_10-0-0.0.17-4.2.i586
gstreamer-0_10-libnice-0.0.11-1.25.i586
gstreamer-0_10-plugin-gnomevfs-0.10.29-1.9.i586
gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good-0.10.22-999.pm.999.7.i586
gstreamer-0_10-0.10.29-999.pm.999.5.i586
gstreamer-0_10-plugins-base-0.10.29-999.pm.999.1.i586
python-gstreamer-0_10-0.10.18-999.pm.999.1.i586
gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good-extra-0.10.22-999.pm.999.7.i586
libgstreamer-0_10-0-0.10.29-999.pm.999.5.i586
and I can NOT point to which if any of those may be needed, other than gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good-extra. But note almost all are packman packaged versions.
Well seeing as I am not trying to use a gnome app, but am trying to use “webkam”, typing cheese would do absolutely nothing.
I am not interested in using cheese.
As for the v4l stuff, it is irrelevant since I can use the cam in skype, kopete, mplayer, smplayer and can watch it and record from it using some scripts I made.
It is specifically “webkam” that I am trying to get to work.
bruce@Bruce-Desktop:~> webkam
./webkam_app.rb:2:inrequire': no such file to load -- gst (LoadError) from ./webkam_app.rb:2 from main.rb:1:in
require’
from main.rb:1
My understanding (which now appears to be wrong) is you could not get cheese working, you never could. Hence THAT mistaken understanding of mine is what I was mistakenly trying to help. Yes, MY mistake. So I’ve just wasted my time completely. >:(
No it is NOT irrelevant if one is trying to get cheese to work. IMHO if you were trying to get cheese to work (which you are not) then that was the problem with cheese. As for webkam, I have NO idea if it needs v4l. It might. It might not. I do not know.
I can’t help there, and I will now leave this thread as I have just completely wasted my time here.
oldcpu wrote:

this thread started by Rolandh31 who wanted to use something ‘like’
cheese in kde…and, i told him it should work…he has not been heard
from since…
six hours later brucecadieux hijacked the thread to say that he
couldn’t get webkam to run…but apparently you missed that and
thought you were responding to Rolandh31…

ok, maybe I did not waste my time.
I just installed webkam and it works. No problem.
When I installed webkam, it picked up these dependencies:
webkam-0.3.2-2.3 Sun 11 Jul 2010 08:21:24 PM CEST
ruby-kde4-4.4.4-1.4 Sun 11 Jul 2010 08:21:23 PM CEST
libsmoke2-4.4.4-1.8 Sun 11 Jul 2010 08:21:21 PM CEST
okular-4.4.4-1.4 Sun 11 Jul 2010 08:21:15 PM CEST
libepub0-0.1.1-5.2 Sun 11 Jul 2010 08:21:12 PM CEST
chmlib-0.40-6.1 Sun 11 Jul 2010 08:21:12 PM CEST
libdjvulibre21-3.5.22-5.1 Sun 11 Jul 2010 08:21:11 PM CEST
libpoppler-qt4-3-0.12.3-4.1 Sun 11 Jul 2010 08:21:10 PM CEST
libspectre1-0.2.4-3.1 Sun 11 Jul 2010 08:21:09 PM CEST
libqimageblitz4-0.0.4-103.2 Sun 11 Jul 2010 08:21:09 PM CEST
libzip1-0.9-26.1 Sun 11 Jul 2010 08:21:07 PM CEST
I obtained webkam from here:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.3/
and I note the software.opensuse.org states:
WebKam is a KDE4 application for taking photos from a webcam.
As far as I know it works only on linux system with v4l-2(video for linux 2).
… so you may wish to rethink your view that v4l is not needed. ?? :\
Indeed I did misread this thread. Once again, my mistake.
I knew brucecadieu could not get webkam to work, but I misread the thread thinking he could also not get cheese to work.
Anyway, webkam is easy to get to work. It does need v4l. … and that could be why brucecadieu can’t get it to work.

Hi
I had issues with streamer in Gnome with a similar problem on my
netbook. I have grabby in my home repository which will take a shot
from the command line. I also use it in conjunction with prey.
Your better of to post a bug for it on the KDE Community people as it’s
tied into gstreamer (ruby-gstreamer and ruby-glib2) some netbook
webcam’s don’t like it.
