KDE Plasma Desktop Shell Crashes On Shutdown Or Logging Out

When logging out and/or shutting down the KDE Plasma Desktop Shell crashes with the following error dialog window:

We are sorry. Plasma desktop shell closed unexpectedly.

Details:

Executable: kdeinit4 PID: 1580
Signal: Sebmentation Fault (11)

This happens most of the time that I shutdown or logout but not every time; Probably 90% of the time it happens.

I’m currently running a brand new install of OpenSUSE 12.1, however, I saw this on 11.4 as well.

Is anybody else seeing this? Is this a bug? Any recommendations on how to fix it?

Thanks,

Gordon

I think you need to examine your local log files and look for some error messages. If you don’t know where to look, I do have a bash script file you might find useful here:

S.L.A.V.E. - SuSE Logfile Automated Viewer Engine - Version 2.55 - Blogs - openSUSE Forums

If you find anything of interest come back and tell us what you found.

Thank You,

Thanks jdmcdaniel3, I’ll give it a try.

I was running into this very frequently with my older 11.3 install. IIRC, I started to see it when I updated to KDE 4.7.2. I had also updated to 4.7.3, but it didn’t resolve the problem (actually found the system even less stable).

Now with a fresh install of 12.1, on the same system (x86_64), and with just stock KDE 4.7.2, I only encounter it perhaps 10% of the time at most.

I have the same shutdown bug. See the post for debug log.

I meet the same problem if i didn’t exit firefox when i shutdown openSUSE
