KDE Plasma 5 and Plasma desktop both exit right after desktop initialises

After login, I see the progress bar (bit slow) then the panel appears, then I am prompted for KDE Wallet login. Then the screen goes black, and I see the login greeter.

I can login with Gnome on the exact same computer and account, no problems.

Is there a troubleshooting guide somewhere? Seems odd that both Plasma 5 and Plasma desktop have the same problem…

What video card and driver? QT5 seems to be having a fight with the nouveau drive and also maybe some Intel GPU chips
