I installed KDE4.3 thinking I could use KDE4.2 at login just as I can
choose KDE3.5 at login. I can’t. The panel is very problematic. With
every login, there is an additional Hardware Info icon in the panel. The
other icons, like the applications menu, dolphin, firefox, and the
removable media icon, are in different locations when I log in. It’s not
even consistent. If I can’t go back to 4.2, is there a fix for these
problems?

Do you have a kde3 login? It might be easier to work you thru from there
Yes. I have a KDE3.5 and 4.3 login.

In konqueror view hidden files
in your username find .kde4 and rename it .kde4_old
Now logout and back in to kde4
It will be like your first login. All your settings are in the _old folder. If you need any we can get them back. But first tell me if it looks better. If not we may need to examine your repos.
That solved it. I’m adding this one to my notes.
I’d have let you know sooner that it worked, but the settings for Knode were
wiped clean as well. It was well worth it though.
