Carl can you tell me?how will repos cause system crash?
@vike4: For example, if you add various KDE repos, with various versions, it’s easy to get a KDE install with a mix of packages from different repos, thus different versions. We see that a lot. In some cases it even resulted in a non-starting KDE. Carl will tell you the same.
In your case: any package that you put in your “Linux Downloads” folder will be installed during update, if it’s a newer version than the one you have installed. Asking for trouble IMHO.
Don’t know what you do with the mmp folders, windoops is to far away for me.
Can you indicate when KDE crashes? Does it throw you back to login screen? If it’s plasma that crashes, can you still do Alt-F2, and run “plasma-desktop” to restart the desktop?
Packages in one repo might conflict with another
mmp folders is for installing multimedia codecs and other multimedia softwares. Thanks for your information knurpht
it is not a fixed situation.for an example:when Skype trying to start at login
Since KDE is very stable on many different systems I work on, I get the idea that you already generated some instablity either in your KDE environment, or the KDE settings in your homedir. We cannot see what’s in the LinuxDownloads folder, what has been in there but is no longer etc., so I can’t say much about what’s causing it.
There’s a couple of things you could do:
- Create a new user, login on KDE as that user, and see if you have the same instabilities you experience in your own account.
- Return to the default KDE desktop, sometimes plasmoids are causing crashes. If you want to know how, let us know.
- Add the KDE Release repo and do a “Switch System Packages to …” on that repo. That would make sure, your KDE packages are all from one version.
BTW, I’ve seen a lot of posts from your side, sometimes it’s a good thing to perform a clean install, then make sure you don’t take the “wrong paths” you took after your first install.
Also: try to limit installing packages from openSUSE repos (GoogleEarth, NVIDIA, ATI are exceptions), rather search for packages at software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.4
In linux downloads i am having some packages like wine, virtual box and skype.i maked that repo to install that packages.
i think the crashes are caused by plamoids.yes my all packages are from one version.i will use the version which one is up to date.
i can’t understand what are you trying to say from the above.should i not search for packages in software.opensuse.org
First: yes, always first try software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.4.
Wine, virtualbox and skype all are available from the (home:)repos. Why keep packages in a folder at the risk of them being not up to date?
What I was trying to say, is that if you’ve been messing with the system a lot to get things working, a clean install, configuration may make things a bit smoother. No remains from possible solutions etc.
To start with a clean KDE desktop, i.e. with default appearance, do the below, NOTE: This leaves all other KDE settings intact.
Logout, Hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to the console.
Login with your username and password, at the prompt do:
mkdir PLASMA_SAVED
mv ~/.kde4/share/config/plasm* ~/PLASMA_SAVED
Now hit Ctrl-D to logout, Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back to the kdm login screen.
Login with username and password, and you’ll be facing the default KDE desktop appearance.
will it destroy all my installed softwares and installed icons, window decorations, desktop themes?because i am going to take a try.
It will only “destroy” your desktop appearance. The installed stuff stays installed, you’d just have to reapply:
plasma dekstop theme + style (window decs)
icons (?)
In the commands I gave the files are moved from the settings folder to PLASMA_SAVED in your home folder, so you have a backup copy.
if i go to search(software.opensuse.org)for softwares, there are 2 options.i will download the .rpm package and install it via yast is it correct?
Basically: yes. Myself, I alway check in the software installer if a package is available. If not, I go to software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.4 and check there. If still not available, I go to the search options, and make the search use the userhome repositories. But I don’t download the package to a folder, I use either one-click install, or I add the repo in Yast. Many packages depend on others. Downloading a single package does not guarantee succesful install. Having a package’s repo available solves that most of the time
General: use the repos.
what does it mean?
with that copy can i restore my icons, desktop themes etc.
search options in software management?what is meant by userhome repositories?

i’m am sorry, but i have to disagree:
that is, i understand the above quote to mean that the first place a
user should go to seek applications to install should be at
software.opensuse.org…which displays the openSUSE 11.4 download page…
i think it was intended to be the search page at
http://software.opensuse.org/search
so, it is not the intention of the quoted above to say that first place
to go to and download a new install iso…
additionally, imho it is best option to suggest the best place for a
new user (such as the questioner) to seek applications is YaST while
only oss, non-oss, update and packman repos are enabled
and, the second best as zypper, with the same repo caveat…
and, finally the third best is to use the /search URL, as long as the
caution to only draw from the basic four repos recommended for new users
is also added…

that the desktop looks like when you first installed.
with that copy can i restore my icons, desktop themes etc.
Yes, by following the same procedure, but now copying the files from PLASMA_SAVED back to their place, this being logged out, logged in in the console:
cp ~/PLASMA_SAVED/* ~/.kde4/share/config
Yet, I think you will have your crashes back as well :). Rather reapply desktop theme, icon settings etc.
Now the crash problem is gone if it happens again surely i will take a try with your code and come back with the results
mkdir PLASMA_SAVED
mv ~/.kde4/share/config/plasm* ~/PLASMA_SAVED
above is your code. Thanks knurpht for helping me
