KDE multi-desktops feature (sorry I don't know the real name)

Firstly,

How do I get it to display a different desktop background for each desktop? I’m sure I saw this option somewhere, but I can’t find it again.

Secondly, it defaults with 4 desktops in a 2X2 grid layout. I changed it to 2, then back to 4 and now it has 4 desktops in a linear layout (1x4). How can I change it back to 2X2?

Thanks very much for your help.

2x2 = Go to desktops in the panel and right click > Pager Settings > Number of Rows = 2

a different desktop background for each desktop?
Not sure

I use the same wallpaper
But different wallpaper in each activity

I have a feeling you can do what you ask though…:\

You can have different activities with different backgrounds. But I don’t think it works with different desktops (althought I am not entirely certain about that).

Hi,

go to system settings -> desktop ->Multiple Desktops. There is the checkbox to bind each desktop to a different activity/plasmoid. Check this. All you have to do then is go to each desktop and change the wallpaper.

Assuming opensuse 11.4/ KDE 4.6.0:

Personal Settings –> Workspace Behavior

Set the “Different widgets for each desktop” option. You might need to unlock widget before you make this change (I’m not sure if I tried it with widgets locked).

When you click “Apply” at the bottom of the screen, all hell breaks loose; that’s probably a bug. Basically, the screen goes blank, the taskbar disappear, the menus disappear. However, CTRL-ALT-DEL still works, and that gives you the option to logout. When you login again to KDE, you can set different backgrounds and widgets on each workspace. Incidently, you will probably lose any previous widget settings, and have to redo them.

(I seem to recall that with 11.3 and KDE 4.4, it was “different activities on each desktop”, and the activities support wasn’t very good in that version.)
