Last week I installed suse 11.3. Most of the time it runs fine, but sometimes my laptop just hangs. Mostly I’m just browsing the internet using firefox. For example when I just installed opensuse, and I tried to maximize the terminal window it would hang and not recover. I’m not sure what is causing it. When it hangs I also can’t move the mouse pointer, or open the system activity window.
I’m not sure I have the minimum specs for kde though, but I can run kde without any problems, it’s fast, it reacts fast. At first I thought maybe the amount of ram 512 was not enough so I turned off all the kde effects, but it still seems to crash once in while.
I tried checking .xsession-errors to see if I could find something, and I found this

Since it’s not timestamped I’m not sure if this is causing the problem…
Does anyone have an idea of what is causing my problem? Any help is appreciated!
So dikkeduif, this looks like your very first post here. Welcome to the openSUSE forums. So, there are several possible issues here. If you have not done so, make sure you go into YaST / Software Management and update everything to the latest version. You can do that in Software Management by Selecting Packages / All Packages / Update if newer version available. If the number of packages to update is large, you will be asked if you are sure, but I select yes. Be aware that to play multimedia files, you need to add the VideoLAN repository to download Libdvdcss so you can play DVD movies and the Packman repository, so you can do everything else. If you have any questions about this, please let us know.

There may be a need to upgrade your kernel file. Here is a good thread on how to do that:

You might also want to add some other repositories to update KDE and other files. Normally though, you want to keep it simple in the beginning. Go through this stuff above and see if anything helps.

Since that log doesn’t have any timestamps, it’s not very useful. Can you check in a Konsole by going:
su -
<enter your password>
less /var/log/messages
(when done):
exit
And scroll through the output? Look for things like “ERROR”, especially around the time of your crashes. Is there anything out of the ordinary leading up to the crash? If in doubt, paste the messages back to the forum. If it’s a lot, use Pastebin.com and post the link.

Everything is updated on my laptop, usually when new updates come out, I install them right away.

I’m not sure if these errors are related to the crashes, because in the meantime I forgot when these errors occurred. It seems odd that I get the sr0 errors though, since that is the CD drive right? I haven’t inserted any disk since I last installed suse.
It has been a while since I’ve had a crash, so I’ll just have to wait or see if I can force it by opening a couple of programs or something. I’ll keep you updated…
What was the time of the crash on Oct 2? Anytime near 15:31? If not, I think those errors may be normal, since there is no disk in the drive.
