KDE is not starting

Hi all,

I have upgraded my laptop from 13.2 version to 42.2.
It was working fine.
Yesterday I uninstall default VLC and install it from packman using yast.
Now the KDE is not starting.

Its only starting “X system”.

zypper lr -d

Have I messed up something?
Please help me.

Rahul

And what exactly does that mean?

Do you get a different desktop than KDE/Plasma?
Or do you get no graphical system at all?

Uninstalling VLC should not have any influence on Plasma or Xorg.
Did other packages get removed?

Hi thanks for the reply.

it is not KDE/plasma.

It is another graphical system.
the start menu has “iceWM” written, and when I open desktop settings it is written “X System Settings”.

Ok, so that means that your system is still working fine, including the graphical session.

This may be the result of two things then, I suppose:

  • you somehow selected “IceWM” to be started by mistake
  • you uninstalled the KDE session

Please logout.

There should be a session selector on the login screen that allows you to choose to which session you want to login.
Currently it will likely say “IceWM”, try to select “Plasma5” instead.

If it isn’t available, start YaST in IceWM and make sure the package “plasma5-session” is installed.
Or just run:

sudo zypper in plasma5-session

and when I open desktop settings it is written “X System Settings”.

The “X” is the window icon (the generic X11 logo in this case)…

the command
sudo zypper in plasma5-session
worked fine.
Now KDE/plasma is starting.

thanks for the help.
