KDE freezes when I put in CD

I have a new CD “Water for Elephants - soundtrack” UPC 886978726629. Water For Elephants [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack], James Newton Howard, Music CD - Barnes & Noble When I put the disk in, everything freezes. The mouse still moves but nothing outside of the open application works. Eventually the open app crashes too. Ctrl-Alt-Del still works so I can restart my computer. Some other shortcut keys work too. When I was trying to rip it with K3b several days ago I notice that the system monitor reported “Disk Sleep” in the CPU usage column. I think this is what led to my KDE desktop not loading - KDE 4 desktop will not load any more. I had to re-install opensuse 11.4 to resolve the problem. Is Sony using some new kind of new anti-pirating software again? The CD plays fine of my OPPO blu-ray player.

Have you run the multimedia?
See my sig or here: Multimedia in One Click

What application are you using to run the CD?

I tried the Multimedia One-Click, no change. I opened the system monitor and inserted the disk and the following programs freeze showing “Disk Sleep” in the CPU column: Plasma-desktop, krunner, udisks-daemon. What does that mean?

Is it the same with all disks that you insert?

maybe a hardware fault…or a BIOS problem…

is the CD player built in, or a USB device?

if it is USB:
-try Elephants with a different USB device
-try it with the CD reader plugged into a different USB port
-try it with a different cable between the port and the USB CD reader

if it is not a USB CD reader
-then add one and try Elephants in the new reader…

if all above changes nothing:
-check your systems board maker for BIOS upgrades…
-boot from SUSE Live CD and insert Elephants into another CD reader (USB
or built in)

I have been using this system for years now with no problem. I have had no problems with any CDs that are not new sony CD’s. The DVD RW is a Pioneer DVR-1910LS EIDE interface. I have burned Linux installation DVDs and installed Linux multiple times without a hitch and on other computers with disks I burned. I do not have another DVD RW to test with. I do plan to get a Blu-Ray RW drive, any suggestions? I have another Sony disk “Salt - Soundtrack” that is causing a problem with K3B. It will not rip all the songs completely, it reads very slowly too. I can load the song directly into audacity without any problem. I ripped it with soundkonverter and got the full song. K3B has worked fine on all my other CD’s.

Your surprised that there is a problem with a Sony Disk LOL They are DRM crazy.

Have you tried just doing a straight out binary copy rather then a rip?

Just remember this the next time you are about to buy another Sony product.

It does sound then like there is something about this CD
Does it say anything about XCP copy protection/audio security?

Have you actually been able to rip it at all? Because from your comments, it sounds like your system freezes as soon as you put it in. Even if it isn’t mounted?!

Correct, I cannot access the DVD drive, mount it or anything. Plasma-desktop, krunner, udisks-daemon all show “disk sleep” in the CPU status column, and it never wakes up. I do not see XCP or any sort of copy protection on the CD cover, but Sony has done things like this in the passed and never warned you. As long as the application is not trying to access the DVD drive it seem to function fine. You may want to buy a copy for yourself and see if you get the same results. I am going to ban all things Sony myself.

I had no problems ripping both Sony disks disks using Windows Media Player on WINXP. Someone needs to update the code in krunner, udisk-daemon and Plasma-destop so they can read the new file formats Sony is using.

I have found another CD with a similar problem. “How to train your dragon” CD soundtrack ASIN: B00386EZJU Amazon.com: How To Train Your Dragon: John Powell: Music
It takes 10 minutes for KDE to open the notification window and anything you choose hangs. The disk cannot be ejected and it continually tries to read it. I am able to log off and eject the CD so it is not as fatal as the Sony CD. I can rip it in Win XP using media player with no problems. I have upgraded my burner to a new lite-on blu-ray burner but this has made no difference in reading these two CD. I will post again if I find another problem CD or if someone ever updates the CD rom driver and I can read these disks.
