KDE has been randomly freezing/stalling when changing window focus, opening, or closing programs. It does not seem to be restricted to any particular programs. If I change focus by clicking in a new window, often, when the system comes out of it’s frozen state, the mouse is still in a button down state even though I’ve released the click.
No errors are generated in /var/log/messages or in ~/.xsession-errors.
I’m running 11.3 and here’s the output of uname -a:

has it always been like this, or did it suddenly start? after how long
working ok?
is this the first version of Linux run on that machine? if not, what did
openSUSE 11.3 replace, and in what way did you upgrade or switch repos
(did you keep home, or what?)
how much RAM and what kind/speed CPU?
have you adjusted power management or BIOS to cause (for example)
hard drives to spin down when not in use for xx seconds, or to throttle
back the CPU during low loading?
if you click on “My Desktop” and look at the speed your CPU is
running at, is it what you expected?
while in My Desktop, note and report what kind of graphics card and
which driver is in use…

The problem started suddenly a month or a few weeks ago. It’s been working OK since 11.3 came out, can’t remember exactly when that was. I installed 11.3 on a fresh drive, not upgraded, didn’t keep home.
RAM - 16GB, CPU Xeon X5272 3.4GHZ
No adjustments have been done to the machine’s BIOS or PM.
Speed is showing at 3.391.94 MHz, which seems right

i have not helped…sorry, and i have no idea how to…except it sure
sound like either a graphics problem or a drive spin down…or
something really strange in the software, which is not usual…
perhaps you can look in /var/logs/messages and see if something jumps
out at you…
OR, that is a pretty fancy new CPU right, maybe there is a bug in the
11.3 kernel…i’m out and hope a real guru can drop in and help

I have a similiar problem I think (should I make a new thread, or put it here).
For me, the computer freezes very shortly after the OS has loaded.
I tried a live disk of Kubuntu, it also froze.
I tried nomodeset and it didn’t freeze, but the mouse movement was slow and jerky.
I don’t think it’s a hard drive spin down, as I have checked the BIOS.
My graphics card is an Asus EAH 4350 Silent. If I need a specific driver to get it working, how do I get that on to the computer if everytime the OS has started (i.e I’m looking at the KDE desktop, ready to start my work, and 3 mins later it’s frozen - no movement from mouse or keyboard).

When did you last update your nvidia driver or x11 or kde (a month ago?),
the current nvidia driver for 11.3 is 270.41.06 (available from nvidia
repository), if I where you I would try the update.

KDE SC 4.6.3 with Xorg and kernel from Tumbleweed, using the intel i915 graphics driver. It started some weeks ago and happens at least once a day which is driving me nuts.
I suppose it is related to the Xorg stack update which came through Tumbleweed some weeks ago but I cannot be sure.
