So yesterday I decided my update after a few months. Box went relatively OK, but I have a problem with my laptop. After the update, logging into Xorg Plasma causes massive flickering all over the place, problems with screen repaints and the system is generally unusable. Graphics stop responding after a while anyway. Consoles seem to work.
However, using a Wayland session seems to work without graphics issues.
This is a Dell latitude E5470. There is a discrete Radeon R7 GPU, which I have disabled through the GRUB boot line because it did not seem to work properly. Everything was working peachy with the Intel graphics.
I haven’t found located any serious errors in Xorg.0.log, or dmesg, but I am not sure what to look for, anyway.
Can anyone help with this? I have nothing against Wayland, but the XOrg Plasma experience has been pretty solid for me the past year and I am not sure Wayland is quite there yet.
Forgot to mention, I tried renaming .local and .config to get a new plasma session, but even with the default settings, the system exhibits the same behaviour.
Well, it turns out that this newest version of Plasma (or the kernel graphics drivers) does not play well with Vsync. Disabling it seems to make everything work normally again.
Hi, I think a few people have experienced this problem. Turning off vsync did mitigate it but you might need this to prevent screen tearing.
Removing the **xf86-video-intel **package resolved it for me. Alternatively you could try using Wayland.
