Hello, I’m running opensuse 13.1 for a long time now. Since today boot ends up in terminal. KDE does not start anymore. Graphic card is nvidia.
Last line in boot.log is something like ‘X Display Manager starting’
I’ve no clue where to start searching from here.
Thanks.
That means that the graphical session failed to start.
You should be able to switch to a text mode login via Ctrl+Alt+F1.
What driver are you using?
If it’s nvidia, there might be something wrong with the installation.
I would suggest to try to choose “Recovery Mode” in “Advanced Options” in the boot menu, this should give you a useable graphical system with a fallback driver at least.
Or remove/rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf if you have one, to not force Xorg to use nvidia.
I’ve no clue where to start searching from here.
/var/log/Xorg.0.log would be the first thing I’d look into, this should tell why Xorg didn’t start.
Please post that file if you need further help, or post /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old if you did one of the above workarounds (this contains the log from the previous boot).
Thanks wolfi. Here is Xorg.0.log after a boot with no workarounds. The boot ends in a console. KDE does not start. To be honest the log tells nothing to me.
Here is the first part. I is too long for one post.

In kdm.log I find this snippet
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
setversion 1.4 failed
klauncher(2637) kdemain: No DBUS session-bus found. Check if you have started the DBUS server.
kdeinit4: Communication error with launcher. Exiting!
kdmgreet(2631)/kdecore (K*TimeZone*): KSystemTimeZones: ktimezoned initialize() D-Bus call failed: "Not connected to D-Bus server"
Looks quite ok to me.
Can you post the output of “systemctl status xdm” run as root in text mode when KDE failed to start?
Does it help if you run “systemctl restart xdm” (or “systemctl stop xdm” followed by “systemctl start xdm”)?
Do you have Autologin enabled? Try to disable it in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager (DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN=“”).
Does at least the login screen showup then?
Also try to switch to a different displaymanager/login screen as a test: (xdm should be installed by default)
DISPLAYMANAGER="xdm"
in the same file.
That’s normal.
But what’s the modification time?
Maybe kdm is not even started?
Although the Xorg.0.log seems to be recent.
Thanks a lot wolfi, I really need advice.

No.
Do you have Autologin enabled?
No.
Also try to switch to a different displaymanager/login screen as a test: (xdm should be installed by default)

With xdm I get a login screen! Using a normal user the start of the desktop stucks in the middle or jumps back to the login screen. However I can login as root (shich I have never done before).
How can I proceed? Thanks again. The kdm.log snippet has not been at the very end of kdm.log. So it may have been older. But I think the modification date was from the latest start.
Well, the problem is this:
Jan 19 19:18:16 Tob-Keller kdm_greet[1722]: Cannot create $HOME
Jan 19 19:18:16 Tob-Keller kdm[1721]: :0[1721]: Received unknown or unexpected command -2 from greeter
Apparently your user’s home doesn’t exist either, maybe /home is not mounted or there’s something wrong with the permissions. Root can login because root uses /root as home, makes it at least a bit easier to debug as you can run a graphical session.
I’m not sure why kdm fails to start though, the user kdm has /var/ as home.
What do those commands give?
ls -la /home
ls -la /var
ls -la /var/lib/kdm
mount
cat /etc/fstab
dmesg | tail
There might also be filesystem corruptions causing this.
As root now I could found the cause for all the strange behaviour: the root partition has been completely full ! Reason: in /var/log the networkmanager log had about 46GBit. After deletion everything is fine again. I’m very puzzled what had happen with the networkmanager Log and will keep an eye on it.
Thanks again wolfi, for your valuable help.
Ah yes, that perfectly explains it of course.
Logging in as root still worked because ext4 (the default filesystem in 13.1) reserves a certain amount of free space for root only, to make it possible to still login (as root) when the partition is full.
Reason: in /var/log the networkmanager log had about 46GBit.
I suppose you mean GByte?
Wow.
Thanks again wolfi, for your valuable help.
You’re welcome.
Glad to hear that you were able to sort it out.
