Thanx again…
I am puzzled with some of the errors. When I tried to switch to kdm with yast, I got this error:
“Configuration Script Failed”
I was using gdm previously.
KDE is working in the other users. It’s just not working for my user.
Again, kernel message when I am trying to login to KDE is (I get it by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F10): “GLib-GObject: assertion ‘object->ref_count > 0’ failed”
Thanx again…
you can perhaps rename ~/.kde and try again.
First off get rid of all the 12.1 repos you probably have a mixed set of lib/programs now.
Second if it is just your user then there is a problem in the ~/kde4 configs for your user.
rename ~/.kde4 to ~/kde4.old note need to be not you logged in
reboot and you should then get a default KDE desktop.
Nope. Didn’t work…
Thanx…
Try logging in as your normal user (naming it USER-1 for convenience here, replace USER_1 in the instructions by your normal username) once. Then login as a user for whom KDE works.
Next, open a terminal window, and do this
su - USER_1
(enter your normal password)
cd ~/
tail -20 ~/.xsession-errors
and post the output here, between CODE tags.
Well in that case you got real problems. Having the 12.1 repos update active is just asking for trouble.with mixed versions.
Get rid of the 12.1 repos and try a zypper ref then zipper up that may clean up stuff but a upgrade from 12.1 to 12.3 is an iffy thing you may need to do a fresh install the get a stable system back.
I checked again, don’t see any 121 repos “active”, agree though that they must be removed. Like the debug repos.
@OP: another thing: in the login screen, please check which session is selected for your user. It needs to be “KDE Plasma workspace”, not just KDE ( my thought is that in 12.1 it was still called KDE, the new users will have been created on 12.3, please let know if this thought is OK )
Here it is:
/etc/X11/xim: Checking whether an input method should be started. Failed to connect to the VirtualBox kernel service Failed to connect to the VirtualBox kernel service Failed to connect to the VirtualBox kernel service Failed to connect to the VirtualBox kernel service Failed to connect to the VirtualBox kernel service sourcing /etc/sysconfig/language to get the value of INPUT_METHOD INPUT_METHOD is not set or empty (no user selected input method). Trying to start a default input method for the locale en_GB.UTF-8 ... There is no default input method for the current locale. Dummy input method "none" (do not use any fancy input method by default) OpenSSL version mismatch. Built against 1000005f, you have 1000105f
Thanx…
I installed LXDE. That too does not work. I had an old Cinnamon installed too. Even that does not work. This means that the problem is not with KDE, its with every DE other than GNOME. GNOME was my pre-installed DE. I am not being able to switch to kdm either. Something is fishy here in my system…
Thanx…

If the OP wants to make sure that there are no packages from 12.1
installed, this query finds out:
rpm -q -a --queryformat "%{INSTALLTIME} %{INSTALLTIME:day} \
%{BUILDTIME:day} %-30{NAME} %15{VERSION}-%-7{RELEASE} %{arch} \
%25{VENDOR}%25{PACKAGER} == %{DISTRIBUTION} %{DISTTAG}
" \
| sort | cut --fields="2-" | tee rpmlist | grep "openSUSE 12\.1 \
| less -S

Did you already try the command posted by robin_listas

above (in your post #12) i see that part (maybe all) of this problem
is with a VM, and this thread probably should be moved to the correct
forum http://tinyurl.com/8xrn2nt so the VM gurus can work the
problem

i agree! and think your VBox smells like old fish. you can press the
triangular shaped icon below this post and request a moderator move
the thread…

I don’t have Virtual Box installed in my system. Moreover, this error was there since I installed OpenSUSE. It’s not about KDE, no other DE runs, except GNOME. And this problem is only limited to my user. I have GNOME, KDE, LXDE and Cinnamon installed.
Thanx to all…

That’s not all the output, there are missing fields; the output has very
long lines.
Assuming you run it correctly, and you just pasted it wrong here, all
those packages below are from 12.1, so you need to upgrade them to 12.3.

That can not be true. You posted this error:
/etc/X11/xim: Checking whether an input method should be started.
Failed to connect to the VirtualBox kernel service
Failed to connect to the VirtualBox kernel service
The word “virtualbox” is clearly there… so you do have some thing of
virtual box installed or configured (improperly).

As I recall Vbox driver is now installed by default. But this system is messed up so hard to say what is happening. And in any case that should only be a warning and not a show stopper.
I checked YaST and found that I have these packages of Virtual Box installed in my system:
Should I remove them?
I also have Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS installed in my system. I have Virtual Box in Ubuntu and I do use it.
[RIGHT]Thanx again…
