Kde desktop settings

Hello,

by mistake, I deleted a large part of my /home :frowning: my fault.
There is nothing there really important, so, not a big deal. BUT…
Now my desktop shows the content of /home/jdd and no more the content of ~/Desktop where I use to store only my main .desktop files.
Is there a way to recover the original setup
I use recent tumbleweed, installed some years ago and zypper dupped
Thanks

long time ago there where several desktop setup available

Restore from backup?

In an empty desktop, right click, pick Desktop and Wallpaper. In some other place in systemsettings you can set some default folders too.

Or create a new user and copy the missing stuff from there.

I don’t have it anymore (even before having the problem)
I do not even find the context menu editing (on mouse)

YES. at the very end of system settings I found the place where default locations are set, and I could recreate the needed folders! Thanks.
However it seems my usual (years ago :-(!) system of having various options for desktop is no more valid.

Yes it’s a solution, but I don’t know where this config is located and I’m afraid of permission problem. I will anyway get a look at this solution

and, by the way, I have a backup, but pretty old (two years). As most of my system seems to work, I don’t want to disturb it and can find there files when needed

thanks

Then you don’t have a backup. A week is something one can most likely recover with some extra work, 2 years is way too far behind.
Aside from having recent backups, it is also worth mentioning that a backup is pretty useless if a restore is never tested.
Since you do not tell us what exactly was lost, it’s going to be virtually impossible to help you recover from this situation, aside from the advice I already gave.

If you are only missing your .desktop files I would restore them from the 2 year old backup.

yes, I did it (mostly).
The main problem was the display of home on the desktop (too much risk of deletion), but I found the setting and could fix it (= have the desktop point to ~/Desktop).

thanks

for a better understanding of the situation, I have nearly nothing important in my home folder (I keep my important files elsewhere), reason why I didn’t keep regular backup.

However I no so far away take a subscription to “pcloud” (the swiss cloud) and they added in my home a virtual disk my system see as a real one. This way the accidental deletion also removed a large part of my cloud. However I had them in the cloud trashcan and could recover all.

thanks for your help

The “HOME” on the desktop is nothing more than an icon. Removing that will only remove the shortcut, not /home.

nope. What I mean is that I had my home as the desktop content (/home/my-account), with all what is on home displayed on screen

MAKE AT LEAST ONE BACKUP AT LEAST WEEKLY !!!
As soon as you’re ready rebuilding your /home/jdd that is.
