You can use Kmenuedit to create your own entries in the KDE applications menus. Ironically Kmenuedit does not have its own icon, but you can start it by Alt+F2 and ‘kmenuedit’.
Another option is to use Dolphin. Navigate to the Desktop Folder for instance, and when you right-click there should be a context-menu item “Create New” with a submenu-entry “Link to application …”.
Both of these methods enable you to create your own application starters.
The answer depends on how the desktop is setup. If you right click on the desktop and the bottom setting is called “Desktop Activity Settings”, then you are going to need to add your program to the menu, if it is not already added.
In the Menu, you can right click on any existing menu item and elect to “Add to the Desktop”. If the item you want has not been added to the menu, then you need to add it somewhere in the menu system. Right click on the menu icon and select “Menu Editor”. Pick one of the categories to add your program. You need to know the exact name you enter to run the program. You can test the name using the menu Run Command option to see if it works. Right click on a category to add your new program and pick “New Item”. Enter the required information including what will the program be called, what name to enter to start the program (this may not be the same as its name), pick an icon for it and then select save at the top left. Once saved, you can close the Menu Editor, find your new program, right click on it and pick “add to Desktop”.
If you have changed your Desktop to the activity of “Folder View”, you can just right click on the desktop, Select Create New and then Link To Application. The entries required are the same as a menu item and even if the desktop is in the “Folder View” activity, you can still add items to the desktop from the menu system by right clicking on any menu item and electing to add to Desktop.
