KDE Desktop icons display after 20 seconds after bootup

Running TW, zypper dup on a daily basis (kernel 6.3.2-1-default), KDE/Plasma, X11
desktop machine with ASUS motherboard, AMD processor, AMD video, 64 gb RAM.

First off - this is not a critical problem - doesn’t appear to affect anything, except the visual delay. However, it is a behavior that showed up after a recent update (I assume). Also, this happens only with the desktop, not my laptop. The problem never existed previously

Problem:
Okay, when the desktop boots up, and KDE/Plasma is about to display the Desktop, most “everything” shows up - Conky monitor, KDE Panel at top, Latte Panel at bottom.

However, the Desktop icons show up 20-22 seconds after all those other Desktop visuals. The timing is very consistent - I’ve timed it a couple of times - exactly between 20-22 seconds. Also, if I click on some application (for example, a browser or Konsole or Dolphin icon),it will NOT be displayed until AFTER the Desktop icons are displayed.

I’m not the deeply technical troubleshooter, but I did some brief research on here and read a post or two about a “Logitech mouse” problem (I have a Logitech M510 wireless mouse with USB adapter), and I have run these commands to see if anything obvious is shown (my logic might be wrong).

An INTERESTING observation … if you look at these logs, the last TWO entries in each output are about 20 seconds apart. The mouse works as expected.

Your issue might be related to 217412 – Since kernel 6.3.1 logitech unify receiver not working properly, in particular the commit mentioned here https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217412#c28.

Thanks @fkrueger

Actually, I read those two links you provided , which is what inspired me to do my two log searches, then to create my post. :+1:

Unfortunately, I dont see any errors in my outputs. (compared to what’s reported in the two links).
Also, the mouse is functional when the desktop initially appears, until shutdown.

I may boot a previous kernel version and see if that reveals anything.

You could also do a simple test to see if it is really the Logitech receiver. Start your computer with disconnected Logitech receiver and see if you have the same effect. You shouldn’t need the mouse for startup as the coursor is automatically in the password field of your login manager. After the system is up you can easily reconnect the receiver again…

Thanks for your reply.

Removed USB receiver, booted up, logged in … same 22 second delay.
(and mouse worked after reconnecting receiver).

I also booted to kernel 6.2.10-1 (verses current 6.3.2-1) - same behavior.

Odd issue

I guess my issue is a bit perplexing

So, a couple of things I’ve done:

  1. moved all documents (only about 10 docs, small in size) off the KDE Desktop elsewhere

  2. logged in with another user account that I’ve rarely used
… the intent of that user account was just for testing stuff.

For (1), nothing changed - still takes 22 seconds from KDE login page until Desktop icons are shown.

For (2), that other user account, after KDE login screen, the Display renders as expected:
… Background image is shown
… Conky is shown
… KDE Dock at top is shown
… Desktop icons are shown (<==== as should be)
… Latte Dock at bottom is shown

All that is displayed within 2 seconds.

As a last resort, I will create a brand new user account for myself, and copy my current user (structure) directories and files to the new user account subdirectory … and if it “renders” as expected, I’ll use it and remove my original user account.

One last question (before I create new user) … is there a “KDE/Plasma user startup log” I can analyze for any delays ??

If it works for different user it is a user config problem.

Try and enable persistent logging, see man systemd-journald and retry.

In the long term users maintaining Tumbleweed benefit from some basic knowledge: How To Use Journalctl to View and Manipulate Systemd Logs | DigitalOcean

BTW: System startup heavily dumps core.

You may want to fix this.

Thanks !!!
Updated to persistent

Also, I dont see Core Dumps now.

aggie@daffy:~>

Well, fixed rear brakes on Jeep, and replaced fuel filter on zero turn then mowed for over 2 hours

Now back to fixing the icon display lag on the desktop. (yes still a problem). If anyone has an idea to try, let me know … meanwhile, I’m off to search for a fix :+1:

It appears to be a user config problem since it is OK with different user removing your cache as you may miss some since the files may be in use best to switch to root in a terminal to remove ~/.cache.If that does not work zap the ~/.config files Note this will remove all settings for your desktop and you will be using the system defaults. If you like puzzles you can deal with the KDE config files one at a time and maybe save some DT customization .

Your suggestion #1 … you already posted that in here and I replied - scroll back 2 days ago.

I’ll try #2 , but yea, that’s also a bit “extreme” - was looking for something a bit less intrusive. But, if it works, it might indicate where the issue lies.

Well, I did this … but the result is as if this is a new user and logging in for the first time. Though, it suggests there is probably something amiss in .config.

But that’s like telling someone to replace their engine in their car because it won’t start, when it’s simply a bad battery.

I’ll keep looking.

There is something that is happening after the login screen until the KDE Plasma desktop is fully displayed, with icons. And like I said, just after login, if I click on Dolphin or Chrome or Konsole, they will NOT be displayed until AFTER the desktop icons are shown.

So there must be some process that’s running and no other Desktop activity can be performed until AFTER that process is complete (and the icons show up).

I was hoping if I jump to runlevel 3, login, then run startx (and redirect to a file), I might see something amiss. Nothing special … I also jumped to runlevel 3, logged in as another user, and ran startx … same output (but they see desktop icons immediately).
