KDE desktop icon selection not showing

Hello!

I’ve got an issue where on the KDE desktop in either desktop mode or folder mode, the icon selection doesn’t show. The transparent selection rectangle that appears when dragging to select multiple items does show up, but when I release the mouse button, the selected icons have no indicator around them to show they’re selected. This happens whether I have one item selected or multiple items.

System is a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro running openSuSE 15.4 with KDE Plasma version 5.24.4. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

First, welcome to the openSUSE Forums.

On my KDE Plasma Desktop, the name associated with the items in the Desktop Folder changes colour when I select them with <Ctrl-Left_Click> – for me, a simple click opens whatever it is that directory (named “Desktop”) and, the name changes colour so long as that item is selected – the high-lighting disappears when I select something else despite that, the action of the single-click is still being executed.

  • The colour change is determined by the Desktop’s Colour Scheme.

I tend to use the transparency effect and, there is an almost invisible edge around each selected item, which is is barely visible, regardless of whether the items are being dragged, or not – good eyes and, a 140 DPI screen …
I must admit, the almost invisible edge is more visible when, the items are being dragged …

Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to be a case of just not noticing that something is selected. Literally nothing changes when selecting an item on the desktop. Not the item name’s cor, background, etc. Nothing. I’ve got the same exact setup and theme/color scheme on another laptop and desktop and they behave as they should. Been using SuSE/openSuSE since v9.1 and this has been the first issue I can’t seem to find a fix for. Needless to say, it’s very frustrating.

I’ve unconditionally reinstalled all the KDE desktop environment packages and that didn’t fix it.

Any idea which config files I could compare on the different installs to see if anything is different? By the way it behaves, it looks to be more of a bug than a setting, though.

Thanks.

On the machine where behaviour occurs, create a new test user and, see if the issue persists with that user.

  • For the case of the user where this issue occurs – assuming that, on the same machine a new, fresh, test user doesn’t suffer from this behaviour – you’ll have to backup the user’s data and then, clean out the following directory trees:
~/.cache/
~/.config/
~/.kde4/

In ‘~/.local/share/’, user defined colour schemes and Plasma “look-and-feel” could also influence the behaviour being experienced – assuming that, on the affected machine a clean fresh test user doesn’t exhibit the behaviour.

@dcurtisfra I just wanted to close this loop. I finally got around to checking your suggestions, and I found that the user-defined color scheme accent color didn’t agree with the rest of the theme. I set it back to the default accent color and everything is working as it should. Thanks for the help.
