KDE boots to a black screen after update

Apparently no one else has had this problem. The last KDE or kernel update made my LInux computer useless. Everything would boot fine but, where the desk top would normally open there was nothing but a BLACK screen and a mouse pointer. The mouse pointer moves normally but there was nothing to click on. CTRL-ALT-DEL would bring up the shut down menu and notifications would pop up. I tried re-installing SUSE 13.2, but no joy. My (not so elegant) solution was to login into the ROOT account (which worked fine) and trash the .KDE folder in my normal account. This fixed the problem but now I have to reinstall all the software and re due all the desktop settings. I am hoping someone more knowledgeable then me will have a more surgical solution for other that have this problem. Also, if this was caused by an update the administrators need to do a better job of policing these updates or at least give us some way to undo them.

I don’t know what went wrong. But there was not need for root there.

Just logout from KDE.

CTRL-ALT-F1

Login at the terminal (as yourself).

rm -rf .kde4

Another possibility: After logout, then login to the “Icewm” desktop. You can safely remove the “.kde4” folder from there.

Yes, you then have to redo your KDE settings. I don’t find that much of a chore. I usually do that once for each new opensuse release.

I can not even boot after update. To avoid that I have to reinstall the bootloader after update. maybe sth. similar for you.

I had issues like this several times; last time, my screen remained black after I installed the nvidia driver. It took me hours of re-installing the driver until I understood that it was not the driver (which worked outta the box) but some KDE settings.

Some also recommend to only rename (or delete) the plasma* and active* files under .kde/share/config instead of deleting the whole folder.

BTW, I would not delete but always only rename (mv instead of rm).

Yes, I agree with that. Normally, I rename, then move a few parts back (the parts where I want to retain the old settings).

Hi,

I have the same issue. When I try to log-in to my account, black screen appears. But when I log-in to another account on my PC, everything works fine. IceWM is also working.

It would really annoying if I have to adjust my settings again

edit: After I deleted my .kde4 folder, I realized my primary input is my TV (on HDMI) and not my monitor (on DVI), and that might be the issue. Or better to say was an issue. Ißm not sure, but if anyone else has similar set-up, please check this
