I am currently running openSUSE 11.1 with KDE 4. KDE 4 seems to run a bit slow on my older system. I am a bit new but from what I have read 3.5 and gnome for the most part run faster. Is there any way to switch to 3.5 or Gnome without doing a re-install? Thanks all that answer!
Just install the KDE3 desktop from YaST > Software Management. Then you can log into either KDE3 or KDE4. You don’t have to remove one in order to use the other.
This was written for 11.0 but the principle is the same.
But you would need the 11.1 repo if you decide to add the build service repo too.

so the comment about KDE 4 being slower than 3.5.xx
Is that true?
What’s the recommended processor speed people would suggest before looking at KDE4?
It isn’t slower, but might seem like it… my laptop for example downclocks it’s GPU to save power, however as KDE4 is using compositing effects by defaults if possible I’ve to wait for my videocard to wake up quite often.
KDE4 should be resource friendlier/faster than 3 was/is.
Minium requirements… no idea, not very pleasant on less than 512MB RAM. Don’t think processor speed matters much (granted it’s not an old Celeron 333 or something).
Did some testing myself last night - 11.1 KDE 4 clean install all effects turned off on an intel 915G video card, Celeron 2.5, 1.5 ram
On the same machine clean install 11.1 with 3.5.xx
3.5.xx definitely seemed much snappier than 4.xx by a long way.
The difference between using kmenu in 3 & 4 was very noticable.
Also - Konqueror in 3.5 was also much snappier to use than Dolphin in 4.x
Should also mention though that 3.5.xx in 11.0 was a little snappier than it is in 11.1
looks like X is sucking up a lot of CPU time in 11.1 that has slowed things down a little on both desktops.
