KDE 4 desktop will not load any more.

I am posting this using IceWM, Thank You Suse for putting more then one GUI on your version of Linux. Both the normal desktop and the failsafe desktop do not load. I get some of my icons on the system tray but I cannot launch any of them and my background does not load. Is there a directory or files that stores the programs that were running when I logged off the last time that I can remove? Or some way I can force it to do a first time start up? I had to kill an active process before this happen. I was trying to save a pdf file with Okular and the program hung (spining colon). It seemed to cause other programs to hang so I logged out. Now when I log in the process never finishes.

How much space is left on the root partition? Temp files can fill it up and a large GUI DE will not be able to start. Also create a new user log in as them and see if the problem persists.

This will loose all your kde4 desktop settings (well they will be still available in the backup) (as will kmail info etc if you need it) and it will be as if it was the very first time you logged in.

But login like this
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10573557/Session Login/console.login.png

Now you will need to write this down carefully.

Once logged in type:

mv .kde4 .kde4-backup

now reboot.
Remember to choose the kde-plasmaworkspace login at the session login screen.

Also, as suggested. You might want to check this
Clear Temp Files at Boot

I set the temp file system parameters to what you suggested and the KDE desktop came up normally again. Thanks so much for your help. And to answer the other question- My root partition has 12.1 GB and my boot partition has 25.1 MB

NO! do not follow this advice, it is not required…

i do not know exactly what caused your Okular to hang while saving a
PDF, but like the others i suspect you filled your root directory…in
any event you can now boot to KDE again and using the DVD to update is,
imho, unwarranted…

how big was the PDF you were trying to save, and please show us the
terminal output from

df -h
cat /proc/partitions
cat /etc/fstab
sudo /sbin/fdisk -l

copy/paste the output back to this thread using the instructions here:

It is far more likely there’s a preference out of whack in the user’s
home directory - and a reinstall won’t fix that. Reinstalling the
packages is a last resort fix, not the first thing to try.

Please, do not follow @rainbowsally’s advice. It’s like @hendersj writes, the cause is often in the user’s homedir, some conflictiing settings, remains of old settings etc.

@rainbowsally: auto-login can easily be “fixed” to getting to the login screen again. Just remove the username (there can only be one) from the line DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN=“USERNAMETOBEREMOVED” from /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager. Please leave commenting/replying to other’s if you don’t know the answer. Shots in the dark may perturb the poster’s sitution even more. Then, if you post, refrain from vague indications like an ‘lx’ thing, search for proper info first if you really want to be of any help.

OK, I spoke to soon. Several programs were not running correctly like K3b (very slow, then hangs up). Now when I load the desktop it looks OK but none of the dashboard buttons work. It also loads extremely slow. I suspect I have a program running on login that is taking all the processor time. I tried logging in as different user, no change. Is there a keyboard shortcut to bring up the monitor so I can kill and remove the malicious program, or some keyboard shortcut to invoke the terminal?

In Ice I don’t know but open a console and type top this will show loads. Use kill PID where PID is the program ID shown in top to kill the process.

Thanks for your help, but I gave up and reloaded 11.4. Sometimes the virus wins.

Looks like the cause of my desktop crash is a Sony CD “Water for Elephants - sound track”.

Can you provide any more detail to this reasoning?

there was no linux affecting virus.

I am not sure how to duplicate this problem, nor do I want to reload my system again. It all started when I tried to rip the Sony “Water for Elephants - soundtrack” using K3B. You may want to follow the new tread I started to find out more. KDE freezes when I put in CD You could always buy a copy yourself and try to rip it with K3B.
