on my opensuse 12.1, videoboard ATI radeon HD 4200 with last AMD drivers by atiupgrade, AMD Phenom™ II X4 945 Processor, 4GB of ram, I upgraded from 4.7 to 4.8.3 from KDE48 repo, but if I enable desktop effects popup an advise with the list of all the effects that cannot be performed, in practice all, if it can be useful composition is openGL.
furthermore, if I enable a cursor theme (any of them, for example red) it works only in some windows, on the desktop and the bar it remain little and black.
How can I solve??

but if I enable a cursor theme (any of them, for example red) it works only in some windows, on the desktop and the bar it remain little and black.

how exactly did you upgrade to KDE 4.8.3 ? which repo(s) did you use, and
how did you switch over to the new repos?

thank you; that’s exactly how it’s supposed to be done, so not the reason
for your problem. i have no experience with ATI video cards or drivers,
but that’s probably where to look.
you don’t have compiz enabled, do you? i’ve heard of problems with compiz,
which isn’t required when using KDE, since kwin does all the necessary
voodoo.
