KDE 4.5 Logoff & Shutdown Does Not Work

I’m running OS 11.3x64, KDE 4.5.

After running updates yesterday (Friday) now the Shutdown and Log Off buttons don’t work in KDE. This happens with the taskbar buttons, and in the Leave menu. The only way out now is to ALT+F1 into a console, log in as root, and run shutdown. The system will shutdown at that point, but it’s pretty inconvenient. I’m using the login manager that installs with KDE (can’t remember the name) since Gnome was installed as a secondary desktop.

I’m posting this using Gnome because it has not been affected by the problem so far. Thanks for any help.

First thing I would try is a new user
See if the same problem occurs

Tried that one, and no joy. KDE imprisoned the new user also . . .

Thing is I’m on 4.6 now so can’t compare with you.
What is result of

Are you sure GDM wasn’t installed and setup as default display manager when
you installed GNOME after you had KDE installed?
What is the output of:

grep -i displaymanager= /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager

It shouldn’t really matter. But to be technically correct, for KDE it should be

I’m not sure what’s not working. (i should’ve asked)
He/she cannot shutdown because it will just go to the login screen after the
shutdown button is pressed.
Or that the shutdown button does nothing at al or is completely missing.
If the latter, it could be a setting in KDE systemsettings somewhere.
There are options there somewhere to allow or not allow the user to
shutdown.

The command: grep -i displaymanager= /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager

Came back with: DISPLAYMANAGER=“kdm”

The command: zypper verify

Came back with this error that just cropped up this morning:

Please see the above error message for a hint.

I’m not sure, but I don’t think a bad language file for gstreamer is going to cause log out problems. This error came up this morning - not last time updates were run. A checksum error is something I’m not playing with, so I didn’t use the file.

Logging out of the KDE desktop is not working. The taskbar buttons and menu options are all present and react when you click on them, but do nothing. I’m going to do some more checking and see what else I find.

The earlier error with the command

zypper verify

Has cleared, and all dependencies are satisfied.

I have no idea why, but I am now able to log out of KDE in the normal manner. Checked the other users, and those work also. The problem seems to be fixed, but I have no idea why.

Thanks for your help.

I had the same problem but after installing KDE 4.6

At the same time I started receiving some audio problem :
“The audio playback device HDA Intel (AL880 Analog) doesn’t work.
Falling back to .”

…and other problems with the mp3 support.

:dont-know: Don’t know the reason but now I can logout and shutdown normally after I disabled the sound notifications
Personal Settings->Application and System Notifications->Player Settings->No audio Output

Hope it can help.
