The official version of KDE 4.3 is almost out. I can’t wait any longer. Its eating me up. I need the new features rotfl!
How do I upgrade from 4.2.4. Hopefully this will help other noobs about this too.
Also, for the benefit for those will be using the official version in August, can you guys also state how to upgrade when the official one actually comes out.
This link provide easy update features through 1 click installer.
Once factory repos added, next time update will update the kde to latest one when released. Can use terminal to update the system with zypper up, once released.
Thanks greatly for this info. I’ve setup an RSS feed to the KDE site so I can have more info quicker.
What is the hard way of doing it. I really would like to get myself off of the one click installers because they tend to add redundant repositories sometimes.
You need to disable any kde repo’s you have already (eg; kde 42’ repo’s)
Then in software management - filter by repo - select the new Desktop kde4 Factory and from the ‘Package’ menu along the top of Yast select Update all in this list Unconditionally.
Do the same in Community kde4 Factory
Accept
Can I say, look out for defunct packages. Ones which have dropped the kde4 prefix. eg; kde4-dolphin, kde4-amarok. Those packages still exist but only for older kde4 versions.
If you filter by repo’s and select the ‘System’, scroll thru. Look for RED packages. Use the versions tab to check it.
My Sincerest apologies for the repeat. I must look a bit closer as to these sort of things. Next time I will look twice before posting :embarrassed:
Well, I’ve tried disabling all my repositories except for the NVIDIA, update and then added the two factory repos that you specified. I selected all to be uncondionally updated but got dependancy errors. Nothing supports the desktop 4.2.98 stuff for some reason
Wow, thanks. That worked out. Just one slight problem
I can update but a couple things like Dolphin and super karamba are being downgraded to 4.1.3. Should I continue?
Save the error to file with the expert button. Paste here.
You probably need to delete the dolphin, it must be kde4-dolphin. RC3 provides just dolphin.
There is probably an option Do Not Install kde4-dolphin
sorry I couldn’t answer earlier had an accident and had to go to the hospital.
Thanks caf. Everything worked fine. It uninstalled all the old stuff like kde4 dolphin and replaced everything with just plain regular dolphin and etc.
Do I delete the old repos?
You can do that. There are possible reasons for leaving them. If 4.3 became unusable and you wanted to roll back, the repo’s are there, you just need to enable them. But this is very unlikely now.
Happy it worked out for you;)
In your defence I have notice a annoying little thing when editing repo’s is that when you hightlight a repo by clicking on it in Yast you automatically toggle enable. As in, if the repo is enabled and you highlight it it becomes disabled.
I dunno if it’s a bug or a feature but I find it annoying
I just switch to factory repo now so I am curious how it will turn out.

So thanks for everything caf. Everything is going sweet :). The Factory repo is rock solid too. Now I’m just doing some research as to how to configure the different Desktops. I know there is a post on this already. I’m just looking for. Should have bookmarked it. :\
Anyway, I saw the post too that you made caf on to upgrading to 4.3. Just wondering, when the official one comes out, will I have to re-download all the updates again?
If you have a cashew in the top right - ignore this section. But to get it.
Right click the desktop and Desktop Settings
In Desktop Activity - Type, in the drop box select Default Desktop Containment - apply.
Now on the desktop click the Cashew and Zoom Out
Now you see each desktop has a configure spanner
It’s easy from here
