KDE 4.3, Proprietary ATI driver, Compositing

Hello everybody,

I’m running openSUSE 11.2 and KDE 4.3 on an ACER TravelMate 7520, which has a built-in ATI HD2400 XT graphics interface. The graphics driver is the latest ATI proprietary driver.

Basically, all the compositing effects work fine, although some are very slow. Now my problem: In about 50% of all cases compositing is switched off after the login. I can activate the effects by pressing Alt-Shift-F12 twice then.

This issue does not seem to be driver version specific. It also happened with older versions of fglrx and with older versions of KDE 4.

Does anybody have an idea what could be wrong, or in which log files I might find useful information? Any hints will be highly appreciated.

This happens to me as well, and I believe it’s related to one of the programs you have starting up with the login of KDE. Try making different programs not start when you login, and see if it fixes the problem.

Personally, I don’t reset all too often (Once a month maybe :P) so it’s not that big of a nuisance for me.

i had that happen also on a 3850HD, would run fine but fail the startup verification of kwin and default to no-composting. Enabling composting in System Settings brought it back every time without problems, so i unchecked the box in Desktop>DesktopEffects/Advanced tab to forego the tests.

not the ideal solution, but it remedied the annoyance and started perfectly after that.

Never had this happen to me, neither on Kde 4.3 nor here on 4.4. Composition works just fine here, and always has. Running compiz and stuff is a breeze.

I’d also say that it’s probably one of your start-up apps that does that.
Open the Kde systemsettings and then look under Advanced > Autostart which programs are starting with Kde.

Hello j_xavier,

your suggestion seems to be a good bet. I activated the check box to disable the tests, and since then I haven’t seen the problem again. Admittedly, it’s a bit risky to make statistics from 5 or 6 tries

Thank you very much.
