KDE 4.2 Update Feb 5th - Caution

Just on the chance that some of you will see this:

My update of kde4.2 from Factory today seemed to bring in some extra features - BUT it screwed up .kde4 (of which I always keep a backup). But to no avail this time.

Had to start again. OK it was set up again 10 mins but it’s pain.

For me the login from update brought in the ‘air’ default wallpaper, left some screwed up icons on the panel and changed my desktop folder location from desktop to /home/username

It’s lookin’ sweet though.

I just did the update to 88.2 and had no issues

That’s good to know. Maybe mine is an isolated case.

I had exact same probs (you helped me with the recreation of .kde4).

But your description of the problem (air background, etc) was exactly what happened to me.

Yes same background problem here.

Also, the list of previously selected wallpapers in Appearance Settings is gone. But I can live with it

For me it was the wallpaper & the folder settings that changed everything else splash screen, fonts, & colors stuck.
Simple fix:)

Interesting. This seems to be leaving Geoff a little alone. I want to know what is different with your setup Geoff. I was thinking it might be repo’s - I’m using QT44.
I seem to recall Geoff you might be on QT45?

What about everyone else? 44/45??
I wonder if that could make the difference?

What desktop containment did you use? Folder-view as background, the desktop with the cashew in the upper-right corner or the desktop without it?

It happend to me too, I had desktop+cashew and two panels. Plasmoids on the desktop were: notes, amarok, weather, flowerpot (google) and pastebin.

I have the QT44
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Qt44/openSUSE_11.1/
and xorg
Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.1

Maybe the xorg made the difference

I’m just in the process of loading unstable factory kde4 in a VM install of 11.1

I tried the qt45 +desktop combo and - forget it.

I changed back to desktop and 44

I’ll report back when I have it all done. Just for interest.

I had the exact same issues (background and corrupt icons).

Same issues here as well on three different systems (two 11.1 and one 11.0).

Thanks everyone for reporting your experience with this - seems most are having some issues.:stuck_out_tongue:

+1

And, now my widgets won’t stay where I put them. Did anyone restore the icons? I can’t seem to get rid of the corrupted ones and I’ve lost some links as well.

I had to remove ~.kde4/ folder in order to make the changes I made permanent.

I also cannot enable “desktop” on Desktop Activity - Type. Only “Plain desktop” is working. As soon as I activate “Desktop” I have automatic changes like folder view reverting to home instead desktop folder, plasmoids cannot move and more.

Hi,

I also had the issues described by caf4926 and for me only removing plasma settings solves the problem (rm .kde4/share/config/plasma*). Maybe you want to try this before because not all settings gets lost on this way

Hope this helps

I had the same problem but dragged the desktop folder from the /home folder
onto the worktop and opened it. Might keep the /home folder - could be
handy.

Main thing about this update is that Knode now works for the first time - at
least it has so far.

Me too. Duplicate and triplicate panel icons, multiplicity of dead panel icons, inconsistent behaviours when I try to correct it all by hand. Removing plasma settings and other remedies suggested here make no difference.

I can eventually rebuild the panel by hand, but it all turns to worms again on next reboot or logout/in. So, for the moment, I do neither.

i updated to 88.2 also and this is the only problem i have with it. its VERY ANNOYING that the widgets won’t stay where i put them…
it isn’t even april fool’s day yet…:sarcastic:
