KDE 4.2 RC1 - Blank Desktop

Woaw, RC1 is buggy… found I think 60 (can’t really remember) updates so I upgraded them all.

Log out, log in… desktop completely transparent, like you see in image editors the grey/white square background. Doesn’t respond to rightclicking either.

So hit ctrl+backspace twice and do a mv .kde4 kde4old, startx, still no luck again a blank desktop.
Alt+f2 brought up the menu as normal though, so I disabled the factory repositories via yast and forced an update on the kde4base-workspace, blah blah downgrade 40 packages.
Working KDE again.

Tried installing from factory again after that, but same result so I downgraded again.

Anyone else experiencing this?

There seem to be a number of others having issues.

I’ll not be updating yet;)

Same problem here on my new Dell XPS 1330 laptop with Intel graphics GM965/GL960. :frowning: But since Alt-F2 is working and all the apps except for plasma seem to be working as well, I won’t downgrade now. Hope you guys fix this soon…

Same happened to me :frowning:
Just checked with zypper up and there was :

kde4-kdm kde4-kdm-branding-upstream kde4-kgreeter-plugins kde4-kwin kde4-kwrite

Maybe we should all agree on one thread:
Todays KDE Factory Update desktop problems - openSUSE Forums

packages were updated. Everything ok here

Posted in the other thread that everything worked perfectly for me on a Dell Inspiron 9300 with ATI X300 Video Card. My KDE states 4.1.96 (KDE 4.1.96 (KDE 4.2 RC1)) “release 78.2”

Same problem here. Some RC this is.

I just finished updating and things are working on my toshiba satellite
also. I suggest yall try again maybe a library or something fifn’t hit the update stack when you did your update
updated about 11.40 zulu jan 22 2009

Problem with that is that you need an internet connection. Kind of hard to get a connection when you can’t get to the networkmanager taht is in the panel that’s refusing to show up. Luckily, the networkmanager didn’t start properly just now so it stuck around on the desktop, allowing me to connect and update.
The result is that panels and widgets are gone now, but at least i seem to have a working desktop again so i can set things up at least.

For future reference, how do you connect to a wireless network from the commandline?

\

start yast and goto network devices > network settings and enable traditional method with if up ok then ifup wlan* or ifup eth*

boot with dvd or .net disk and choose update. that is the method that I used during a recent 11.2 alpha 0 that completely thrashed my computer everything is fine now.

There is another method booting from bios that I need to research its in the start up manual that comes with the 11.1 boxed edition

Good Luck and have fun
