I am using suse 11.1 with kde 4 desktop.I am a newbie in suse.So i need some help  I think that my pc doesn’t make the updates correctly.Because i have installed suse in my pc 5 days ago and it hasn’t made any update yet. Also in my pc there isn’t any message for the update of kde desktop. Is this normal?

Open a terminal and do

zypper lr

Hi,

open Yast, Software installation. Choose Installation Source and have a look in OpenSuse Update. Do you find this repository? Do you see installed and non installed update packages?

Greetings

Michael

P.S.: Regarding installation of KDE4.2: you have to add following repositories (use this as URL under Adding repositories in Yast):
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.0
Index of /repositories/KDE:/Qt/openSUSE_11.0
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Extra-Apps/openSUSE_11.0
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.0_KDE4_Factory_Desktop

First if you have installed libdvdcss from Videolan, disable that repo.

In a terminal go su

type:

zypper ref

now:

zypper up

ok.Thanks.So everytime i want to update my suse i have to use these two commands? Why i can’t make any updates using the graphic environment?

Of course you can. Open YaST and you will see modules to install/remove and update your software.

There are two kinds of updates. Security fixes are official updates and you should have some icon in your panel that checks for them and tells you if there are some available.

Updates from repos, such as KDE:backports, packaman etc. You use those at your own risk. Updating KDE and other software via YaST - openSUSE

Another note: The repos given above are wrong for your 11.1 installation. If you want to upgrade KDE 4.2, use http://en.opensuse.org/KDE/KDE4 and http://en.opensuse.org/Talk:KDE/KDE4#Dependency_issues_when_updating_KDE_4.2

ok thanks. So what are the official right repository for me?

Blue a certain YES.

Green a certain ??

Red = NO

The rest, you must have added somehow.

If you want to have updates to kde4 from build service, but remain stable you could add

KDE4 Build service Stable 4.1.3

Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/STABLE:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.1

Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/STABLE:/Extra-Apps/openSUSE_11.1

Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.1
So my final recommendation would be:

OSS
NON-OSS
UPDATES
Packman
Mozilla
Nvidia
and the kde4 repos above

**Make sure you have the updater running in your tray if you prefer that kind of method.
