KDE 4.12 - all fine

Just a quick heads up - I installed KDE 4.12 today (using opensuse 13.1) and everything seems fine

Seems OK (so far) with 12.3 as well

I have lot of conflicts on OpenSuse 12.3 x64 See: SUSE Paste

And also there is no kdm-4.12 package (only kdm-4.11.4-1016.1.x86_64.rpm) in Index of /repositories/KDE:/Release:/412/openSUSE_12.3/x86_64

What do you mean with “everything”?

Did you test if Kaddressbook now is aware of the fact that Linux is multi-user and that file systems can be ex/imported that thus VCard directories are shared between systems/users?

Is the Category choosing menu back in Kaddressbook?

Sorry Henk, no input from me on Kaddressbook (12.3/KDE4.12.0) - I don’t use it so am not familiar with issues you ask about.

Have you tried Kwrite? Black text on a black background makes life a
bit tricky. In ‘settings’, there was no schema for ‘fonts & colour’ so
had to create a new one. Must expect something to get lost on a KDE
‘upgrade’ I suppose.

Bit staggered to find that, after re-login, all my Firefox windows were
in the correct desktops. That is unusual. Mind you, Claws has continued
its recent habit of appearing on any desktop bar the right one.

Well, it was a sort of way to let you tell what you mean with “everything”. You do not define “everything”, thus what now is the contents of your message? It only tells us that somebody, using some features (but we do not know which ones) of KDE has tried KDE 4.12.0 and did not find anything that hits him.

I do like such sorts of reports, even if they are based on only a short and limited try-out. But please then try to explain what you tested to improve the contents of your message immensely.

He said “everything seems fine”, which to me is like “first impression: OK”.
I updated, met a pack of dep errors, which currently cannot be resolved. But this not from the KDE repo itself, but from the additional KDE_Extra repo, the ktp (telepathy) packages. Since the proposal zypper makes suggests moving to i586 versions, I suspect not all 64bit packages have been built. I uninstalled the ktp packages, back to Kopete for now.

Well, python-sip and python-qt4 are not included in the 4.12 repo, so you should downgrade them to the versions from the standard repo:

install python-sip-4.14.6-1.4.1.x86_64 (with vendor change)
  obs://build.opensuse.org/KDE  -->  openSUSE

install python-qt4-4.9.6-3.2.2.x86_64 (with vendor change)
  obs://build.opensuse.org/KDE  -->  openSUSE

And also there is no kdm-4.12 package (only kdm-4.11.4-1016.1.x86_64.rpm) in Index of /repositories/KDE:/Release:/412/openSUSE_12.3/x86_64

That is correct.
Kde-workspace (where kdm is a part of) didn’t (and won’t) release a 4.12 version, it got frozen at 4.11 by KDE upstream. It will still receive bugfixes though.

For me not all because a lot of packages have to be downgraded
(webkit, libqt4*, etc.) because they be not more in the kde*412
repos but in oss/update or packages as at example phonon-backend-vlc
get removed.

Not bad and at the moment the gui (and the started apps) looks okay but
i won’t say an “all fine” for it

Cloddy - On 12.3/KDE 4.12.0, at least one text file opened “readable” with Kwrite. Black text on white. I didn’t do much with it.

Henk - Understand what you are looking for/would like to see; me too. However, I can’t begin to even scope the dimensions of a Test matrix for something as broad as KDE given the wide range of Applications, Languages and other variables.
So Knurpht understood pretty well, perhaps a more correct statement on my part would have been “…fought thru a few dependency/version issues, made what appeared to be the right selections to preserve the system functionality I have use so far…”.
Alas, I am fairly certain I won’t have touched 30% of the functionality of KDE 4.12.x when KDE 5 comes along.
But I do like what I use, and congratulate the folks who keep making it better.

Well, I hope you do know that this is not an officially supported repo. It’s merely there so that openSUSE users can try the latest KDE version.

And those packages have to be downgraded because you didn’t have the official versions installed in the first place. (btw. a change from libqt4-4.8.5-xx to libqt-4.8.5-yyy f.e. is not really a downgrade, the packages just have a different build number because they are from a different repo).

If there are real packaging problems, you should report them at http://bugzilla.novell.com/ of course…

In know this, enjoy this and be thankfull for the work. All fine now?

In the 4.11 repo there is libqt4-4.8.5-333.1.src.rpm and in the 4.12
repo there is nothing of libqt4. Therefore you have to step back to the
versions from the oss repo which stay by 4.8.4. As i said this is
nothing bad and i’m sure there is a reason for this but you habe to
handle this, that’s all and i suggest only to check your system for
orphaned packages.

Again, for me all is okay and tomorrow the last older package
“kdebase4-session” is getting replaced by the new one and now i have no
orphaned packages but i checked it with “zypper se -si | grep ‘System’”.

I successfully updated to KDE 4.12 via YaST last night on an openSUSE 13.1 system with kernel 3.12.5 and the latest stable Xorg w/Mesa 10.0.1.

Everything was working fine, except that it initially refused to support OpenGL compositing, instead forcing it back to XRender even after a reboot. Then I tried executing:

KWIN_COMPOSE=O2 kwin --graphicssystem raster --replace &

which didn’t initially seem to fix anything, but it’s working completely now. No problems, and it feels fast & smooth.

Thanks, can you also tell me please, where can I find libkgapi? thx

It’s in the standard repo. The package name is libkgapi2-2.

But why are you looking for it? It should be installed automatically by YaST/zypper…

Well, the KR4xx repos only contain libraries that are needed to compile the corresponding KDE version and are not included in the standard distro.
libqt4 is only in the KR411 repo because the repo is available for 12.2 as well, which contained a too old libqt4 version.
But I’m sure the libqt4-4.8.4 in 12.3 contains at least some of the bugfixes of libqt4-4.8.5, so you don’t really need the newer version.
If you have a problem with libqt4-4.8.4 you should report it as well, then all users could profit from an online update…

And 13.1 includes libqt4-4.8.5 anyway.

As i said before i habe no problems with the libs from oss instead of
the former kde411 repo on 2 pc and one laptop. My only little problem
was to think for checking this packages und this has nothing to do with
the online update  Thank for the other infos.

After all, I don’t update to feel relieved, if everything works again. To me the general idea seems more, to update to have an improved functionality. And regarding this aspect: what was improved in comparison to 4.11.4? And yes, I read the press release.

What i have understand is that if you use at example kate than you
will see new features but the gui is frozen so there won’t be nothing
else than cleaning bugs.

From my view i would even use the version from the update repo or the
latest from kde.org which stays at the moment in kde412 but not one
version between them both. 4.11.4 and 4.12 seems stable in the same
way for me so why not using the newest one
