Hi. I am runnig Tumbleweed with nouveau driver on Geforce 6 and i have problem with KDE 4.11 or is it nouveau fault ? When i set in desktop effects -> opengl 1.2 everything seems ok but when i set opengl 2.0 screen is like this:

When i set opengl 3.1 screen is ok but without effects.
Well, I guess nouveau just doesn’t support OpenGL 2.0/3.1 good enough yet. (your gfxcard doesn’t support 3.1 hardware-wise in any case, strange though that the english Wikipedia article mentions OpenGL 2.0 support, whereas the german one speaks of 1.5… :\ )
I don’t have problems with OpenGL 2.0 on my old Radeon 9600 card with the open source radeon driver, so I doubt that the fault lies with KDE…
So just leave that setting at 1.2 and be fine, I’d say.
Or you could of course try to install the proprietary NVIDIA driver instead if you want to. The G02 (304.xxx) should support your card.
Hi wolfi323](https://forums.opensuse.org/members/wolfi323.html). with proprietary driver 304.88 which is latest for Geforce 6 there is no problem with opengl 2.0 or even 3.1. Everything works ok. But unfortunately i cant install these drivers for 3.11 kernel (cant build kernel module) , thats why i am using nouveau now.
PS: with previous version of KDE (4.10) it was ok ( opengl 2.0+effects ) even with nouveau.
Maybe the corresponding code in KWin has changed so it triggers a bug now in nouveau?
Anyway, if it works fine with the nvidia driver and the radeon driver, I would rather assume it to be nouveau’s fault, don’t you agree?
I think I have seen a patch for nvidia 304.88 and kernel 3.11 floating around though.
I’ll have a look if I can find it again.
So here’s a patch for 304.108 to work on kernel 3.11:
I’m not sure if that works with 304.88 as well, but since you have to install the driver manually anyway (and can’t use the version from the repo), why not just download and install the latest version (304.108)? 
I also think it has something to do with nouveau (cooperation with kwin ?) because few minutes back i have experienced whole screen messed up even on opengl 1.2. I had to manually restart X server.

Thank You wolfi, everything works smooth with 304.108 also opengl 3.1 (i expected that because this worked previously). I am just curious what this thing nouveau+kde 4.11 means.
I guess this just means that nouveau still is by no means a suitable replacement for the proprietary driver yet (especially regarding 3d/OpenGL), although it may work for basic stuff.
How good it works does depend on your particular graphics card model as well though, of course.
