KDE 4.1 task bar: collapsing windows of same application into singleicon?

Hi,

currently the taskbar in my KDE 4.1 will display all windows of all
applications in a single row, leading to ridiculously small icons for
each when a large number of windows is open. I can’t find any way of
either having two rows, or having all windows of the same application
being collapsed into a single icon.

Does anybody know how to configure this, or whether this still is a
missing feature in KDE 4.1?

Thanks,
Jörg

Can you not right click the taskbar and from the context menu, select a way to configure it? Or, add a 2nd one?

Or, you can right click the “Start” button > "Panel Menu & see what’s available there.

Finding a place to right-click it isn’t so easy, by the way…

However, “Task Manager Settings” offers only two checkboxes:

  • “Only show tasks from the current desktop”
  • “Only show tasks from the current screen”

So I’d say that’s still missing in KDE 4.1.

someone already resolved this issue via custom plasmoid:
multirows task manager by 8siem KDE-Look.org

For anybody wanting to vote, that’s three related bugs I could find in
KDE bugzilla:

Bug 152700 - Grouping of tasks in the taskbar
<http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=152700>
Bug 162568 - Task manager hardly usable with a large number of windows
open <http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=162568>
Bug 163935 - Taskbar doesn’t show tasks in multiple rows

I confirm that having upgraded with Opensuse 11.1 2 days ago, I still have this problem showing up:

all the applications are iconified independently in the panel, which leads to ridiculously small icons. I just don’t understand that this CRITICAL problem is not yet solved.

As far as I can telln, people on the KDE forum mentioned that it is solved in the svn version. But that is already a couple of months old, and the version included in the OpenSuse 11.1 release does not include that feature. So what is happening??? :frowning:

It does work in the 4.2 beta I’m currently running,

Unfortunately screen power management is broken in the beta, so my monitor has to be turned off manually. If that doesn’t matter to you, install the KDE 4 Unstable repositories and update the packages, ignoring the dependency conflicts with Powerdevil.

4.2 Final is due in Late January. EDIT-the 27th to be precise:
