Hi guys
I’m having problem with my kde 4.1.3.
I cannot move my icons or rearrange them, even though my icons lock in place is not checked.
Im using suse 11.1 64bit,and my kde is set to folder view.If I try and move any icon around a little + sign appears next to the icon and when i drop the icon anywhere on my desktop it just pops back into previous position.
does anyone know how to fix this?
thanks
You might want to consider upgrading to to 4.2.4
KDE4.2.* (How To Add) Guide. - openSUSE Forums
However, IMO the idea of icons on the desktop is archaic and far more intuitive options are available in kde4 today.
You can have quick access to Fav’s in the Kicker and an odd item in the Panel + I use a second Panel at the top which auto hides:

But 4.1.3 never worked very well TBH.
You have to change your whole thinking in kde4, the Desktop is no longer a Desktop as you knew it.

the thing is that i cannot use kde’s advanced options because im using my linux machine as a 3d workstation, and compiz and desktop effects are not working well when you run 3d application like maya or houdini.everything completely falls apart.
ill try with new kde,and see if that works.
i really like the kde4 look and feel but i really think that is not yet ready for everyday usage, since amarok, krusader and pulseaudio are just few programs that do not work properly on an everyday basis.
If you do upgrade pay attention to the priority if the Update repo, it’s mentioned in the Guide I posted you.
Be aware you will have to delete the old powerdevil, which in kde4.1.3 is a separate application, but in 4.2 it has been integrated in the kde4 base. You will have dependency issues to deal with but the solution is always to allow the vendor change to build service.
You can use the expert button with dependency errors to save the info to a file and then paste it here if you like. We can give you the answers.
thanks caf4926
but my conflict file is too long for me to paste it here.
is there a way i can upload this file and link the attachment here?
You can use pastebin or
when replying in a thread, scroll down to additional options - manage attachments
there is no attachment option under the additional options
and in the bottom of the page are lines reading:
Posting Rules
You may post new threads
You may post replies
You may not post attachments
You may edit your posts
and im not sure i understood you about that pastebin
Like this
pastebin - Upload a Text or Source File
Yes, you can’t post attachments because you are too new or have to few posts - It’s part of the spam guard setup.
cool
thanks for that info
here is the link to my conflict file
pastebin - kde conflict - post number 1477229
(a lot of conflicts)
First read my HowTo again carefully. Check your repo priorities!
Notice the comment on name changes in kde4 at the bottom of the HowTo.
Basically, the answer is work thru and try and find in each case the ‘Vendor Change’
eg:
- Following actions will be done:
- do not install libkde4-4.1.3-4.10.4.x86_64
- install libkde4-4.2.4.1-2.7.x86_64 (with vendor change)
- openSUSE
- –>
- openSUSE Build Service
mark the box for each as I have.
The very first error I would try
do not install NetworkManager-kde4-lang-11.1-6.4.noarch
- X] Following actions will be done:
- do not install kdepimlibs4-4.1.3-5.2.6.x86_64
- install kdepimlibs4-4.2.4-1.8.x86_64 (with vendor change)
- openSUSE
X] do not install kdebase4-workspace-4.1.3-10.3.7.x86_64
X] do not install kdebase4-runtime-4.1.3-4.2.9.x86_64
And so on. Those last two for eg; are not showing change vendor but notice the do not install I selected is from kde4.1.3
