KDE 4.0.5 packages

KDE 4.0.5 has been released since the 4th of June, but I cannot find its packages in any of the repositories.

Does anyone know if those packages (build for opensuse 11) will be available or we have to wait for the stable release of KDE 4.1?

They should appear in the KDE4:/STABLE repo when available.

One thing to remember though, is that the devs have applied a number of patches to the default 4.0.4 packages that incorporate whatever fixes and improvements they could integrate from 4.1, plus whatever they came up with on their own (such as the ability to hide the notorious cashew). I’m guessing, but not stating authoritatively, that 4.0.5 won’t appear until those can be ported, otherwise it would appear in some ways to be a regression.

If you’re looking for drastic improvements, try 4.1 from KDE4/factory.

Just my 2c…

Thanks for the answer.

I have already upgraded to the last patched version of KDE 4.0.4 but i was curious about the 4.0.5

I think I will no try 4.1 yet (just to stay with stable not beta packages)

What’s the difference between KDE 4.04, 4.05, 4.08 and 4.1 ?? Are the last two the same thing? (I have part of 4.08 installed because I wanted the weather widget) I just want to make sure I am staying with the most stable versions of everything.

Also, what’s the difference between “factory” and “buildservice” repositories? Is there any danger with enabling them both with the regular Suse repositories? (Like dependency problems??)

Thanks.

4.05 has incremental improvements over 4.04.

4.08x represent the development snapshots for KDE 4.1, they’re published on a more-or-less weekly basis from the development server at KDE.

4.1 doesn’t exist yet, as a version, since it hasn’t been released. It’s only in testing (beta) right now. You were correct in assuming that 4.08x and 4.1 were related, since the 4.08x (and maybe 4.09x) builds will become KDE 4.1 “officially”.

As to factory vs buildservice, the build-service is a fantastic tool that openSUSE uses to make current, updated packages available for users.

The KDE4:/factory packages are generated by the build-service, and made available for download.

Hope this helps clear things up?

Somewhat. Still not sure about mixing repos. I read that mixing factory repos with anything else is a bad thing. Do you agree?

What I have done is disable the standard repos and enable all the factory repos I could find and upgraded. Two packages didn’t upgrade (kshutdown and a service kit). Anyway, I then disabled the factory repos and re-enabled the standard repos including packman and the buildservice. There were a couple more updates but I ran into conflicts and dependency issues.

So it seems to me that you either upgrade using factory and stick to them or you stay with the standard repos. (and KDE 4.04) My question is can I used buildservice and factory repos together?

does that only work with 4.0.x? cuz i have been running 4.0.8x for months & i tried to remove the cashew according to the instructions, but it never worked.

Ok, to clarify, the factory repo is part of the build-service.

If you’re using KDE:/KDE4:/factory then stick with that repo. You don’t need to disable to standard openSUSE repos, since the packages are built to supercede any dependencies in the standard packages.

But don’t try and pick-and-choose from /factory if you want to stick with KDE 4.0.x, because it will only lead to grief…

Hope this makes sense?

The 4.1 builds don’t have openSUSE-specific patches applied directly, they keep them as close to upstream as possible. They’re updated on a weekly basis, and it would be a bit of a nightmare to manage and troubleshoot.

I suspect that it will be addressed when 4.1 is released, if the cashew is still firmly present…

It does make sense and thanks. I am using only the factory repos now so I’ve got a working version of 4.1 beta. I swear it seems like it works better than the release of KDE4. So many issues are fixed and now work.

It seemed to me to be superfluous to have a set of widgets or plasmoids for the desktop, another set through Superkaramba and another set for the panel. I’m guessing that Superkaramba will only be used for those folks using 3.5 and will die out with the KDE4.1 or 4.2 release. I also like what they’ve done with the panel to make it more flexible and customizable.

Finally, I have had zero crashes in 4.1 beta. KDE4 caused numerous crashes. Now that may have been my fault, but for me I wouldn’t waste my time with KDE4; going straight to KDE4.1 (whatever it’s current state) gives me a working stable platform.
