Will there be a KDE 3.5 offering in Opensuse 11.2 and beyond? Really not liking KDE4.anything and Gnome is just as bad.
There will NOT be an official release. Its possible someone from the community may offer one, but I have not read of anyone doing that yet … but it is still early days in the 11.2 release cycle.
Take a read here: KDE3 - openSUSE
Presumeably its possible to add the repository and install KDE3, but I would not know exactly what applications need to be added. Note also the big warning:
WARNING: The KDE:KDE3 repository is currently unmaintained and may not even update and build correctly.
I have not tried it but on the 11.2 install DVD at the screen to select desktop you are given three options.
- Gnome
- KDE 4.1
- Other
Select other and KDE 3.5 is an option.
No. That is true for 11.1 under “other”. It is not the case for 11.2 under “other”. There is NO KDE3 choice in 11.2 under “other”.
That’s what I thought. Is there a GOOD KDE4.x tutorial or guide out there? What I’ve found has been lacking in answering the questions I want answered.
Must admit aside from there not being an Nvidia repo when I built, I much like the way that everything pretty much works out of the box with 11.2
Two exceptions: multimedia formats and secure wireless under KDE. It works with Gnome with no worries but not with KDE.
KDE4 is more heavy and need more resources. We found it difficult to use on some of the old machines in the office. So, it is left with old openSUSE versions. Some cases, we are forced to deploy alternatives like Puppy.
On powerful machines, I like KDE4 and its flexibility. Some cases, I keep one of the “desktops” in KDE3 style.
There are a lot of improvements in the knetworkmanager and I started using it again after a long gap. When you try certain things there, like configuring a new connection, adding keys etc., you need to re-login to make it effective. It looks like it is not re-reading configuration data when you make changes. Disable/enable sequence does not work. So, you may think that it is not working.

unfortunately, the bells/whistles/glitter/glitz/cubes fanboys ruined
KDE4 and are trying to make all of openSUSE a windows look/act-alike
sigh.

Many reboots, power downs haven’t helped. If it’s working and I don’t know how will I know? Logging in with Gnome secure wireless auto connects as I asked it to. Under KDE it doesn’t even bother to try after I give it all info. I realize this is the the correct place for addressing this so if you don’t reapond I understand!
Describe it step by step so that we can attack them.
Firstly, are you able to see your AP?
Then, what are the settings you did to configure it in “Manage Connections” under “Wireless” tab?

i saw this in the alt.os.linux.suse newsgroup yesterday, and grabbed a
copy. From: Mark S Bilk 23 Nov 2009 14:07:31 -0800 (PST)

Here’s the announcement of KDE4.3.3, with a screenshot showing
non-transparent windows. So there must be a way of turning off
transparency. (Maybe click on the “cashew” (see below) in the
upper right corner of the screen.)
http://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-4.3.3.php
This KDE 4.3.0 page also shows several screenshots with
non-transparent windows:
http://www.kde.org/announcements/4.3/index.php
The designers have invented various “cute” (they must think so)
neologisms:
“Plasma” – the user interface of KDE4
“plasmoid” – an applet, widget, or other component of Plasma
“cashew” – a boomerang-shaped icon appearing in some components
that calls up a menu when clicked, e.g., for adjusting options.
There is a component called the “dashboard”, which I haven’t
found an explanation of yet, but it can use applets from the
OSX “dashboard” (whoopee).
The user section of the KDE wiki, probably a good place to start
for an introduction:

Simple introductory page for the UI:

The Plasma FAQ – very informative for problem solving!

Technical info about Plasma, of which, e.g., the “List of known
plasmoids” may be of interest to users.

those are useful techniques on Windows and other game systems…but,
very seldom will a broken Linux application or system be magically
fixed by just a reboot, warm or cold.
if you don’t believe me, ask around…even google knows…
