Reason I ask is I’ve been using SUSE Linux 10.0 (openSuse I believe) and just did a clean install of openSuse 11.1 with KDE 4, then not liking it, tried Gnome.
Well that was a bit too primitive looking for me (though I liked the utility of it).
So I installed again, all partitions the same, with KDE 3.5.
What I got looked like a mix of Gnome and the new KDE.
Is this right or did somehow the two get mixed together? (there was even a Gnome shortcut in the start menu, believe it was link to “Gnome help”)
With the latest try (KDE 4) I selected some custom software options. I’m a little concerned about comments regarding stability in KDE 4 (especially since I selected custom software options) and preferring my previous GUI am wondering if I should revert to 3.5 or just stick with 10.x
I’m using KDE-3.5.10 on openSUSE-11.1. It appears fairly similar to KDE-3.4.3 (if I recall, SuSE-10.0 came with KDE-3.4.2) .
I do run various gtk apps.
I also installed kde4-kdenlive on my openSUSE-11.1 KDE-3.5.10 desktop, and so I probably picked up some kde4 desktop s/w as a result.
In fact, I decided to go ahead and install both KDE3 and KDE4. But when I log on to KDE4 , I log on as a separate user (ie a different user than when I log in to the KDE3 desktop) , just to be confident that their will be no hiccups with my /home/user directory.
Still, from a look/feel perspective, IMHO KDE-3.5.10 is a LOT closer to KDE-3.4.2 than it is KDE-4.1.3.
My version of 10 came with one of the Linux mags, at any rate sounds like I shall have to try a clean install again (I’ll use a blank drive just to be sure)
I much prefer the KDE version that came with my 10.0, and of course it would make sense that 3.5x would be a lot closer as it is of the same series.
I prefer kde-3.5.10 myself, but I suspect when openSUSE-11.2 comes I, I may switch to kde-4.3 (which hopefully will be ready by then).
Reference your previous thread, there are so many posts on this forum, its really impossible for volunteers like myself to look at them all. Typically I only look at posts reference sound problems, although on occasion I will try to help with a hard drive mounting problem or with a multimedia application problem. It was your reference to 3.4.3 in this thread that caught my eye, as I never recalled using that (I used 3.4.2 in SuSE-10.0). I figure you must have updated from 3.4.2 to 3.4.3.

-np, old cpu, I put that in there mostly as a reference to my opinion of the new GUI
But I have for the most part confirmed the odd results I got with the succesive installs (regarding the mix of Gnome and KDE desktops) as I’ve now installed KDE 3.5 and the desktop is as it should be, no hint of Gnome, which I lay out below
openSuse 11.1
First try: KDE 4 - default (new blank drive)
Second try: Gnome - default
Third try: KDE 3.5 - default
Fourth try: KDE 4 - customized software
Fifth try: KDE 3.5 - default (second/other new blank drive)
Third try gave me desktop mixture including Gnome characteristics with link to Gnome site in start menu.
All is fine for the moment and I have the customized KDE 4.x on one drive and KDE 3.5 on the other.
I’m adding this because maybe it will be of interest to the developers, seems an obvious bug of somekind wether it be with openSuse or my hardware etal, perhaps I could duplicate it and see if it’s a functional alternative!
